Coues assassin Report post Posted October 27, 2014 I just got my license got what I need to get started and waiting for season to open. Even though it opens nov 1 is that to early to be taking cats and fox? I know the later in the season the better but if I catch some now is it a bad idea? Edge Report post Posted October 27, 2014 Winter hair growth is actually triggered by the summer solstice. That way the hair coat is fullest at the winter solstice when the process begins to slowly reverse.
olmos1010 Report post Posted October 27, 2014 I would say so, unless you are trapping above 5500 or 6000 ft. elevation I would hold off for at least another month. Trust me I'm itching bad to get out and set some traps but in my opinion the fur just isn't ready yet and won't be worth much if anything with the fur prices down like they are right now. Its just too hot this time of year in the desert.

standman Report post Posted October 27, 2014 Down south I would wait till December. Up here where I'm at, killing animals above 7000 ft, they are almost prime. Two Fox I killed today the skins were white. Brian
mmtx10 Report post Posted November 5, 2014 Fox will be ready soon. They always prime first. I start with trapping fox in the mountains in November then hit the cats starting in December. If I catch a cat in my fox sets I look him over and make my decision then. One of the nicest cats I caught last season was in the last week of November.
