Kaffer62 Report post Posted October 27, 2014 I decide to purchase a leftover muzzleloader coues tag in New Mexico this year. I contacted several people trying to get a feel for what I should expect on this hunt. Due to work I wasn't able to make a scouting trip until 2 weeks prior to the hunt. The scouting trip showed me the beautiful land I would be hunting but without seeing a single deer, I was somewhat worried. Work has been pretty busy and I wasn't able to take any time off for the hunt. This gave me a day and a half to hunt. I decided that the short time I had plus the fact I have never shot a deer with my muzzleloader, the first legal deer I saw would be what I would go after. My dad, a friend from work and I left on Friday and headed straight for NM. We arrived to where I wanted to be shortly after 11. It was 1215 when I set my alarm and went to bed. The alarm went off at 430am. After getting a cup of coffee we headed to the glassing spot I chose during my scouting trip earlier. It wasn't 20 minutes into the grey light of the morning, I glassed up several does. As we watched them a little 2x2 stepped out. I ranged the deer at 910 yards. After watching them and discussing between the three of us, we had a plan. My friend and I circled around the deer and got the wind in our favor. We worked slowly into the same draw the deer had fed into. Right away we picked up a doe at 208 yards. We snuck in a little closer and when we reached 185 yards we found a great spot I could shoot from. With my friend as a spotter I fired at the buck. He told me I shot high. Thankfully the deer just spun and didn't run away. I quickly reloaded and adjusted for the second shot. Once I fired you could hear the round strike the deer. He took 2 steps and laid down. I couldn't believe I had just shot a deer with my muzzleloader. I made my way to the deer, took pictures, cleaned him and headed for the truck. This was by far one of the shortest hunts I have ever had. Everything had fallen into place just like it was written for me before hand. I feel so lucky to have had such a great hunt. Thanks for letting me share this story and Thank you Amanda for such a great website!

Couestracker Report post Posted October 27, 2014 Congrats again on your success! I saw my first buck today, a forky at 430 yds along the state fence, in the bottom of the canyon below the water tank. The sun was setting, so not enough time to make it happen. Extra thanks for saving me from myself, that's the second time I've tried to "lose" my Swarovski's! Nice to finally meet you Frank.
