First javelina

Recommended Posts

This is my daughter's first year hunting. She put the hours in to obtain her safety card. She has been to the range and out in the desert practicing her shooting skills. After not getting drawn for Jr. Elk or Jr. deer, we bought a leftover Javelina tag.

For three days, we have spent a lot of time glassing, talking, napping in what has been perfect weather to be outdoors. This morning, we found a herd of pigs and were lucky enough to have a small boar stand broadside at about 80 yards for enough time for me to watch her pull up the rifle, comment that she couldn't see anything through the scope, realize that the cap was still on, flip it up, and fire. The pig turned around about four times and ran down into the wash, I told her that she had to have hit it, and that I was surprised that it didn't drop after spinning. We found blood at the bottom. followed for about 100 yards and found the pig in some catclaw. She was able to put the finishing shot on it. When I retrieved it for her, she was all smiles. In her words, it was the best day ever.... You know, I have to agree with her!

Parenting done right! Congrats to your daughter and you. Of all the hunting I've done and tags I've filled, there was nothing better than watching my daughter fill her first tag this past Friday. I'm sure you are still floating on cloud 9!!

Thanks for the kind comments all.. The rifle started out as a stock remington 700. Rebarreled with an 18.5" model seven barrel chambered in .243. I cerakoted the barreled action prison pink and the bolt graphite black. After seeing that even the youth stocks were going to be too big for my daughter, I took a standard ADL wooden stock and hacked away. 11 inch LOP, shortened the forearm by 3 inches, slimmed the entire stock down. The standard pistol grip is designed for an adult sized hand, So I moved it forward with a healthy dose of bondo. The paint job is simply a rattle-can special. Pink recoil pad is made from a 99 cent pair of flip flops.

She was recoil shy with factory ammo. So I loaded it with 70 gr Sierras and IMR 3031 for a very pleasant 2850 FPS load. Here's a better look.

Very very cool. I have a petite little daughter coming up on hunting age, and the LOP and pistol grip issues are what have me worried in her case. Even the youth stocks seem to have the same pistol grip dimensions as the full sized versions.
