rancilio Report post Posted October 14, 2014 What do people do with fox pelts after a fox is skinned? I think that I don't have time at the moment to dry it, unless you tell me its quite easy to get a decent result. Can I freeze the skin until I have a bit more time? Or send it off to somebody or someplace to have the pelt worked on properly? I like to have a nice fox skin or two around the house. Thanks.
Pine Donkey Report post Posted October 14, 2014 Roll it up fur side out. Make sure no hide is showing. Put it in a ziplock bag and squeeze out all the air. Toss it in the freezer and it will be fine for a year or two.
s.teel12358 Report post Posted October 14, 2014 Flesh it, turn its face and then salt it till it's dried out and send it to a tannery (when you have time) or just give to your taxidermist and they will take good care of it for ya. But don't tan it if you prefer to sell it to fur buyers because you'll get less for it. Also, I don't know about other taxidermist but Signature Taxidermy, in Flagstaff, will skin, flesh, salt for free. You will just have to pay for the tanning.
rancilio Report post Posted October 16, 2014 Thanks fellas. I have the pelts in the freezer waiting for me to decide on what to do. I think I need to find a tannery or local taxi to make it nice.

rancilio Report post Posted October 16, 2014 About 5100ft. Surprising to me how thick the fur is. No ticks but covered with what I think are fleas.

Dustin F Report post Posted October 22, 2014 I used the tanning kit from Sportsmans to do my fox I shot in March and it turned out pretty good I skinned my tubular though so it made it very tough to do it and it took almost 15 hours of labor but it takes about 5 days to get it done my next one I won't do the tube style but it does look kinda cool that way
rancilio Report post Posted October 23, 2014 Cool. The satisfaction of a self-tanned pelt is nice. What does a taxi charge to tan?
