Snakes In the Trees

Recommended Posts

Today I went out scouting for my friends deer hunt coming up this late October. I honestly didn't want to even go out scouting solely due to knowing the rattlers are still out. There is something about me and snakes in which no matter what I do I can't get away from them. I have stepped on 2 rattlers in my life, and have stepped 5 feet or closer to around 10 now. Anyways, I found a good spot to glass in front of a smaller tree like I always do and started glassing. Around 5 minutes in I looked behind me and see a snake around 8 feet away almost gliding through the tree. It fell off and slithered away at an extremely fast pace.

I went home and found out that it is a couchwhip snake and that rattlesnakes also will climb trees rarely. It is just dandy that now I will be frantically searching the ground and trees for snakes when I go out, there won't even be time to see deer. Anyways, everyone be safe out there with all the hunts starting up, and good look to you all.

They're great swimmers, too.

I know the feeling! Stepped on em, stepped next to them, Peed on one, almost squatted on one and spent 4 days in the hospital from getting bit by one! I HATE rattlesnakes. It is hard to hunt deer when all you're doing is watching for snakes.

Seen a couple Sonoran Whips down in 36b pretty high up in trees , one was choking down a field mouse... but through the years I have had a few close calls with rattle snakes, the closest was having one go right over my boot when eating lunch on a hike back in by Reavis when I was in 6th grade... when he cleared I was blowing my whistle like a crazy kid ... Always on edge during this time of year as they are not hibernating and often looking for warmth in the cooler mornings ... My dad has twice taken the heads off Rattlesnakes while quail hunting when they literally put their nose right into the end of the warm barrel of his shotgun after shooting quail...

Water mocasins will drop in your boat while fishing on bayou.

I have also had way to many close encounters with rattlers! dad would always know when I was a kid when I would step on 1 dove hunting cuz he would here bang! bang! thud... then follwed by me screaming unmentionables. I also have had full contact with 1 but fortunately barely juiced me do to my pretty good vertical leap and shotgun blast that damaged my boot. that day when I returned to truck 1 was under truck then 1 in road 50yards up rd. never hunt outskirts of new construction cuz snakes radically higher in numbers due to losing former homes.

Btw coachwhips are awesome but in my experience quite moody and they will whip the snot out of ya

I have encountered a rattlesnake in a tree once....we were driving down a dirt road with the windows down and I thought I heard a rattle. So I backed up and saw it about eye level in a tree (if I am remembering right it was a mesquite). It seemed content in the tree and we got some video of it. I have never seen one in a tree since that day (plenty on the ground though)....but if you spend too much time thinking about rattlesnakes in trees you won't be able to walk anywhere! It's a creepy thought.

Should have seen my first few hunts after seeing my first bear in a tree. :[

Coach whips are lightning fast but very harmless.

I myself have stepped on several rattlesnakes. Luckily early in the morning and they were cold. Only one that wasn't was a sidewinder that was buried in the sand. I was wearing sandals! Luckily I stepped right on his head and as he wiggled out of the sand was only interested in getting away. Pretty sure I jumped at least 6' straight up. The poor little guy was so scared he shot into a cold stream and pretty sure he drown. It was a hot summer day, but that creek was fed by very cold high elevation water. It would turn you blue, so I'm sure a cold blooded snake went into shock when hitting it. Last I saw it was getting washed down stream, I was shaking for quite a while. Funny thing is, I think that's the only sidewinder I've ever seen.

Here is one that was posted several years ago. Jamie (MCElk) called in and shot this badger. As he picked it up he heard a snake buzzing. After searching around he realized it was above him. Some people would leave the area, others would quickly kill the large rattler, Jamie saw it as a photo op.

OK, I'm not scared of snakes at all, but a rattler in a tree even makes me squirm a little.
