Wyoming trip Part 2

Recommended Posts

I dont normally post my pics and stories but this last hunt in Wyoming was one to remember. Being with family, and my son being along for his first actual hunt, made it a special memory for me. Would like to say a special "thank you" to my Brother in law Kevin who helped make this hunt possible for me. We have had many memories together and this was another one to add.

We made the drive up to Cheyenne on Oct 3 (which also happens to be my son's birthday). We celebrated at Texas Roadhouse and the all important birthday cake in the hotel room afterwards....My son would not let me live it down if he didnt have a cake for his bday.

The next morning we woke up around 3 am and made the drive to our hunting area. As soon as we hit our unit we were into bucks. It is so much fun to be able to look over numerous bucks and know that you have only seen 1/20 th of the unit. We even glassed up a heard of elk in the plains.

Day 1 had us with the first buck down on our hunt. Kevin posted his picks already in another thread but long story short he sealed the deal on a great buck! The mass on his buck was awesome and probably the biggest buck in the unit.

Day 2 we headed out to come in the back way to an area we had seen a nice buck the day before only to be halted by a locked gate with no trespassing sign. The landowner only had about 100 ft of property on this road but it was locked nonetheless. We had already driven over an hour into this place and had seen numerous bucks on the way in so I decided to go ahead and hunt this area and see what we could find. We probably glassed up 15-20 bucks but only one was a shooter and had just walked onto private land. We found 4 or 5 more herds of antelope in the distance and set our sights on a nice buck that was rounding up does at a rapid pace.

We watched as he would stare at every other herd in the area. As soon as a herd would get too close he would run over, beat the crap out of the buck and steal all his does. This was awesome to watch...I tried to get a pic of him fighting the other buck but didnt come out too great..

I decided the time had come and I wanted to take this buck. Kevin stayed behind the binos almost a mile away and watched me make my stalk. There wasnt much cover and only 1 small knob to hide behind as I made my approach. I got to 500 yds and could not see the buck. Kevin tried to text me that the buck had run off again but there was no service. I slid back down the hill and belly crawled to 440 yds where I now see the buck standing with two does. I sat and waited for the buck to clear the does then as he stood broadside I shot. I heard the all knowing Thump and knew I had hit the buck. As I get my scope back on him I see him stumble and hes down. The kids and Kevin walk up to join me and we head over to see my buck. I had my sights set on a bigger buck than the last trip and I accomplished my mission. Very solid Wyoming buck, huge body, and white tipped horns. Happy as could be especially to share the hunt with my son, bro in law, and nephew.

The next day we hit some fishing and had an absolute blast. Thanks to forum member Evan for the tip on where to fish!
