Dustin F Report post Posted December 30, 2014 I'll stick to spot and stalk even tho I have not been lucky enough to harvest a deer I did blow a stalk yesterday got close enough for the shot and got busted when I drew back but it was a rush either way it only made for a long walk back with an empty pack
WHT_MTNMAN Report post Posted December 30, 2014 Spot and stalk is all about picking the right stalk. Once I figured that out it became so much easier. I've killed coues bucks from less than 30 yards to well over that, with the average being in the 40-55 range. I think that slightly longer shots are the norm with spot stalk. BUT... I agree that letting them come to you increases the odds in your favor.
Alpinebullwinkle Report post Posted January 3, 2015 I shot my best Coues deer four years ago on a spot and stalk archery hunt early September. He scored 121" gross in velvet. I pulled back on one buck about 5" bigger an hour and a half earlier in the same location, but I wasn't fast enough to let the arrow do its job. I then checked out an adjacent ridge. When I returned to the original ridge I spotted my buck bedded at 24 yards, with likely the same 100" buck I passed up earlier at 15 yards. Admittedly this was the luckiest day hunting in my life as I saw 9 beautiful bucks on this morning hike. The key was a thunder and lightning storm that scared the crap out of me on that ridge...... but luckily turned out to be worth the risk!
