az_shooter Report post Posted October 8, 2014 Make sure you get the ones that will vibrate with a certain button, it comes in really handy when your buddy is sitting on a high point and he's walking you into a buck on an archery hunt and he wants to get my attention without making noise on the radio to tell me the deer is 50 yards walking right at me. Little story for ya there, I never got a clear shot at the buck but when he left his bed and started walking towards me it was so thick I couldn't even see him. So I knew when my radio vibrated it was important and I was able to talk/whisper with my buddy who was up on the hill watching through the glasses and he was able to tell me to stop moving in on the buck cause he had started moving towards me. Anyways great feature to have, sorry for the rambling. Haha
mbiewer Report post Posted October 8, 2014 I told my brother the same thing for my Christmas list this year. A set of radios better than the Motorola talk abouts that don't reach out very far. Shooter what brand do you have?
ThomC Report post Posted October 8, 2014 The FCC controls how much power any radios put out. They are all the same. Now if you know somebody that knows how to tweak them then more power to you. It is still line of sight and wont go thru trees.
Str8Shot Report post Posted October 8, 2014 Technically and legally you are required to obtain an FCC license and call sign to use channels 1- 7 if transmitting at more .5 watts ( many do transmit higher even though Still used as FRS but also GMRS) Channels 8-14 transmit at .5 watts and are FRS and require no license ... Channels 15 - 22 are GMRS and require a license and often go as high as 5 watts in hand held units. All channels are affected by obstacles and get max range line of sight ... So basically all Hybrids that claim longer ranges are in fact counting the channels you legally need to have a license for , at least until they do away with it, but that bill to do so has been sitting idle since 2010... az_shooter Report post Posted October 9, 2014 I told my brother the same thing for my Christmas list this year. A set of radios better than the Motorola talk abouts that don't reach out very far. Shooter what brand do you have? They are Motorola radios but they aren't bad at all, another time we used them that stands out is when we hiked way back into this canyon and decided to go out the other side so my friend went back to move the truck around and he was all the way at the mouth of the canyon at the truck and I was towards the back of the canyon and he called and was still able to ask me if I wanted a Gatorade from the cooler when he came back. They are actually my buddies radios and I don't know the exact model but I know for a fact they are Motorola brand.
