PelaPapas Report post Posted October 3, 2014 .270wsm vs .300wm 1. Which caliber is cheaper (factory ammo) & more readily available? 2. Which one is more flatter shooting? 3. Which one out of these two would be best all around for Javelina & Deer? 4. Are short magnums more problematic feeding? Any info is appreciated...
scoutm Report post Posted October 3, 2014 .270wsm vs .300wm 1. Which caliber is cheaper (factory ammo) & more readily available? I've not found one to be a difference in price or availability 2. Which one is more flatter shooting? With the most common bullet weights the 270 WSM with 130 or 140 will shoot flatter than the 300WSM in 165 or 180 3. Which one out of these two would be best all around for Javelina & Deer? 270 WSM IMHO 4. Are short magnums more problematic feeding? In my experience...YES Any info is appreciated... lancetkenyon Report post Posted October 3, 2014 .270wsm vs .300wm 1. Which caliber is cheaper (factory ammo) & more readily available? .300WM would be way more readily available. The .270WSM is less popular and a lot fewer factory rounds are available, in less places. Almost anywhere you go will have .300WM of some sort or another in a pinch. 2. Which one is more flatter shooting? Depends on what weight and what distance. A 130gr. .270 will be flatter than a 210gr. .308 at closer distances, but over 700 or so, the .308 will surpass the .270. 3. Which one out of these two would be best all around for Javelina & Deer? Only those two species, the .270. But the .300WM is so much more versatile with a lot more loading availabilities. 110gr, to 230gr. covers every North American species from yotes to the big bears. 4. Are short magnums more problematic feeding? More so, yes. Common, not so much. Any info is appreciated...
100%DIYazCOUES Report post Posted October 3, 2014 I'd take to .270 over the .300 for pig and deer.the.270 is perfect for deer and overkill for pigs, the .300 is overkill a bit for deer and just plain ridiculous on pigs.
sjvcon Report post Posted October 3, 2014 I am a big fan of the .300 WM, but I am also a big fan of the .270 WSM. You can't really go wrong with either one. They will both handle just about anything you want to hunt in the lower 48 (except Moose maybe ... but maybe not). The .300 WM is probably available more places, but I've never had issues getting the WSM anywhere either. Both shoot flat ... you probably won't notice much difference.
PelaPapas Report post Posted October 3, 2014 Thanks to everyone for their input. I got a offer for a .270wsm for my .300wm, Just trying to see if there is any big advantages over .300wm that would be worth trading.
Red Rabbit Report post Posted October 4, 2014 For deer and factory ammo, my choice would be the 270 WSM over the 300WSM. Not much flatter but a little less recoil. The 130 gr 27WSM is about 1" flatter than the 150gr 300WSM at 500 yards with a 200 yard zero (per the federal ammo website). If you throw elk into the mix, I'd run 300 WSM. My early WSMs had feeding problems (Kimber, HS), early meaning within 2 years of release. But if you want my preference, run 6.5 WSM ;-)
Coach Report post Posted October 4, 2014 Why not morph them into IMO the best all-around hunting round, .300 WSM? In your situation, I might take the .270 WSM over the .300 WM. I agree with Scoutm, except I haven't seen any feed problems with short mags. And I agree with 100%diyazcoues (hope I got that right) that any 300 mag is overkill for javi, but definitely not for deer. It's splitting hairs at some point. They're both great all-around cartridges, so it really depends on the actual guns being traded - What makes of both rifles are you considering trading? Browning'sCustomMeat Report post Posted October 4, 2014 I shoot a .270wsm. Sold my .300 so I could get it. have no regrets on the decision either. Wouldn't hesitate to use it on elk.
dse Report post Posted October 4, 2014 If both guns are of like quality, I would trade 300wm for a 270wsm any day of the week. I've had a couple rifles in both. I've never gotten rid of a gun quicker than I did the 300wm's, and the 270wsm is easily my favorite deer round. Hard hitting, flat shooting and mild recoil. firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted October 4, 2014 I've had better luck with animals being dead right there on the spot with a 300 over 270wsm.... But, the 257 wby has them all beat in that area!
STOMP442 Report post Posted October 4, 2014 Deer and pigs don't need a magnum. Standard .270 any of the 6.5s or the .25-06 would be just about perfect. Honestly if I were to have a magnum it would be one in .30 cal pushing the heaviest bullet possible to maximize potential. After all people get magnums to have better performance, just as well get it all.
Chris Report post Posted October 4, 2014 Is .257 wby ammo pricey? Is that the same as .257 Roberts?
lancetkenyon Report post Posted October 4, 2014 .257 Weatherby is a .257 Roberts on steroids...and nitrous. Same bullet, just about 400fps faster. Like a .308 Win to a .300WM. And most Weatherby ammo is pricey.
