Spotting Scope ?'s

Recommended Posts

Schmitty,

I just pruchased the Zeiss 65 angled scope a few weeks ago. I got a great deal from Camera Land (a coues whitetail.com sponser). It was a SHOT show special. I got the scope body for $999., and then got the eye peice. There was no shipping either. I figure I saved a couple hundred bucks. Full Warrenty as well. You might check into that. I just bought the Zeiss camera adapter. It works awsome. I got the Velbon Traker 2 tripod from Sportsmans Wharehouse (130.00). The whole set up cost me around $1950.00. There have been gale force winds around Silver City the past few days, but I have been out, and gotten some pretty good pictures with this outfit. The only draw back is, the camera adapter is HEAVY! I probably won't haul it into the whitetail hills. It weighs as much as my scope. But, I am going to have a good time with it! Zeiss optics are some of the best. I've been sleeping with mine. :P

Hey C+S, thanks for the tip! I've played around with that knob but never thought to do that!

I also have the Zeiss camera adapter........that is one heavy chunk of metal! It works awesome though, extremely sturdy and well built! I hardly ever use it, because the scope is heavy enough.......and to throw this adapter in the pack adding another 100lbs......no thanks! I have used it twice that I can think of when I first bought it, and it is still in mint condition if anybody wants it? I think I paid over $300 bones for it and it never gets used....I will post it soon in the classifieds soon.

now that i think about it.....that wasn't such a good sales pitch :P Aside from the weight, it is an awesome adapter ;)

Thanks to all for your replies.

With the angled eyepiece do you find that you have to readjust your tripod when swapping from your bino's to your scope. I typically have to spend a few minutes getting my tripod set up just right for maximum comfort before I begin to glass. Which setup (angled/straight) sould more easily allow me to keep the tripod legs in the same position? Adjusting the stem up or down is no big deal. A critter can disappear out of my bino's FOV in a matter of seconds, I'm just worried that if I have to fool around w/ the tripod much, I'll have a difficult time reaquiring the critter.

thanks again for all your help.

If your neck and back don"t bother you from tipping you head back to view thru your binos you would probably like the straight scope best. I switch between my binos and angled scope all the time with a quick connects attached to each then just adjust the post. The post goes down with the heavier scope making it more solid.

more than likely you will have to lower your tripod head when you move from your binos to an angled spotter.

If you turn the STS upside down like I mentioned before you can use them both at the same height. Also, I have used the ATS and I have a helluva time finding the critters with it....... Probably me but it seems 10 times harder that a way.....

C-S if you would turn the ATS upside down like you do with your STS you would be able to tip your head back like you do with that beer can and I bet you would do great :P  :P
