QCwtAddict Report post Posted October 2, 2014 Well I picked up a pound of RL17 to try it out with berger 140's. Problem is now I am looking for load data and I can't find much. Anybody used it before that can recommend a good load to work up from?
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted October 2, 2014 Never in my 270, but I use I with the 155 scenar in my 300 wsm... might be a little fast for the
azhuntnut Report post Posted October 2, 2014 I think RL17 was made for the short mags. I use it in my wssm and get great accuracy and velocity. Try www.reloadersnest.com website for load info, and search google. David
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted October 2, 2014 Reloadersnest has no loads listed for 140 gr bullet and rl 17, just 19 & 22.
AZbowhntr Report post Posted October 2, 2014 I could help you if you were shooting the RL19. Sorry
QCwtAddict Report post Posted October 2, 2014 Would I be better off trying the rl22? That's the only other powder I have on hand right now.
azhuntnut Report post Posted October 2, 2014 Just scroll down a little bit and you will see several on the reloaders nest website. If it is not a Berger, it is still a good starting point. David http://reloadersnest.com/frontpage.asp?CaliberID=
dse Report post Posted October 2, 2014 I use rl-22 for 270wsm with 130 swift bullets. Getting sub moa groups out of all 3 rifles we load for.
STOMP442 Report post Posted October 2, 2014 Since it has a burn rate similar to H4350 you can use start data for that and work up from there.
scoutm Report post Posted October 2, 2014 I really like R17 in a 270WSM I have but I found it to be a bit temperature sensitive so be a little careful. I did my load development when the temps where in the 60s with no signs of pressure at all. Last time I shot those rounds it was upper 80s low 90s and I was starting to see some flattened primers and the bolt lift wasn't as smooth as it normally is. I had great accuracy results with it though.
QCwtAddict Report post Posted October 2, 2014 Thanks guys. I think I'll give it a shot. scoutm- what size bullet did you use?
1uglydude Report post Posted October 2, 2014 I love RL 17 in my 270 wsm. Amazing velocity and accuracy. I use the 129gr Barnes LRX, so I contacted Barnes and talked to the rep about the best start and max loads. My max turned out to be 62 grains and I load at 61.4. That gives me 3350fps with no pressure signs.
