How do you fight a bad mechanic?

In my line of work its rare to see a happy customer. People don't like bringing their vehicles in for regular service and if their vehicle is broke down or acting up, we are the devil out to get them!! Yes it costs money if you can't do it yourself. We have book times and standard labor rates. We have to make a living too. For the most part they aren't out to get you. 7 out of ten times when something happens like it did to you, it's just coincidence, replace one part another fails, and so on. Most of us feel like crap when that happens because we know the customer will think we're trying to pull a fast one and screw them, but it honestly happens that way more than people care to think. The other 3 times, you actually getting screwed!! And it gives all of us a bad name. Like mentioned earlier, talk to the main boss/owner. In my experience if you complain enough (even if it's not our fault) you'll get it free or cheap.

exactly! thats why i dont do side jobs or work for a place that has "customers"

no thanks.

i hope you get your truck fixed. you wouldnt believe how many times you fix one thing and something else pops up. i used to think the odds were impossible but i learned. not saying that they arent trying to screw you, its possible. if youre gonna have work done take it to a place that has a good rep and that has experience with your vehicle. price should never be the main deciding factor IMO.

I know what you mean about side work!! I only do side jobs on the stuff I know won't break any extra parts, or for friends that if stuff breaks they know the drill. And I agree 1000%!!!! That cost should not be the deciding factor! Shop rate is usually dictated by experience, the correct tools for the job, and insurance. Plus a few other things of course

Let me add my 2 cents, I had a similar deal when I did my egr delete and external oil cooler i drove for a few days and started to have other issues, all were coincidense. Not to the tune of 1000 bucks though. But I did get stranded 2 times.

One other deal is Mark Salem, he does a radio show on saturdays and runs great shops, check him out. I know he will go after the other shop if they did try to screw you and he will fix your issues as well.

just about all of us have been through the misdiagnosed car problems . Some times even the best of mechanics - have to stand back scratch heads or other spots and say - damned if I know

then some will take a guess , which is usually wrong.

thats why if its minor - I can stand back scratch a spot or 2 and try something else but getting a qualified mechanic isn't always easy. just like anything - lots of good ones around who'll do it right and for a fair price but just as many whom really don't know crap and could care less and screw a lot of people.

Nothin worse than having a car in for repair and they say yep - it's fixed - give a price and you go over to pick it up and it starts - stalls and will not restart - didn't have that problem when I dropped it off!!!! guess agin- happened 3 times in a row
