5guyshunting Report post Posted September 24, 2014 You guys know why the archery hunt is not in October right? That's when it gets hot.....and I'm not talking the weather! weather dosnt bring a dog into heat so , I dont think weather is the culprit, but im sure there are other scientific evaluations if you know elk 101. Seldom Drawn Report post Posted September 24, 2014 The rut is kicking butt right now, 6 nights in a row i have been out to 7W ,6B, and 11M and found an average of 2 to 6 bulls calling every night from 5:15 to dark. absolutely no hunters around.to many hunters only hunt the popular spots where everyone is or hunt the bedding areas when the elk are down.and scare them to another county,to many videos on how to hunt and call elk, elk hunters normally only spending 13 days a year hunting them and they think it should be easy and to the guys who think you can't call big bulls in anymore it's because you don't know what your doing. stop chasing them up the mountain when they know you are following them yet you keep cow calling 30 times and bugle your guts out. and everyone wonders why the bulls shut down really. by know means am i an expert but i live in elk country and am out almost everyday of the year it really hasn't change much.just a lot of novice hunters who think it should be easy it's not.
Seldom Drawn Report post Posted September 24, 2014 You guys know why the archery hunt is not in October right? That's when it gets hot.....and I'm not talking the weather! Sometimes the first 15 days of October are killer, and sometimes the last 10 days of September are even better.

I know what you are talking about, a person yesterday was bugeling every 5 minutes for about 4 hours and it was obvious it was a hunter.
WHT_MTNMAN Report post Posted September 24, 2014 Seldom- read my other post...big bulls dont get called in most of the time because of what you posted. I have elk in my yard almost everynight year round. I know what I'm talking about. Actually there are far more people that don't know what they are doing than do.... bonecollector Report post Posted September 24, 2014 Where I was they were bugling till about 10-11 then starting back up around 3 or 4. Very very few bulls with cows and running the other direction on cow calls. No not a hoochie mama either. Lol
HUNTnTAT2 Report post Posted September 24, 2014 The big bulls are still rolling solo but are close to the herds. The mediocre bulls are running the herds. Rut activity was very sporadic. Vocal till 8/9am. Alot of the evenings I initiated the conversation and called in a nice solo bull but the shot was obstructed. Rutting is very sporadic. One day theyd be singing. The next, crickets. TONS of guys running roads bugeling their brains out. Or just pressuring and chasing elk while still calling behind em. Loco ocho is getting tougher every year to hunt. Too many guys educating the herds. Good Luck!
Chris Report post Posted September 24, 2014 PRE-Rut. And when the temp drops about 15 degrees..... lookout!
huntlines Report post Posted September 24, 2014 Been out with my daughter the last four days. She had to go back to work which sucks because we were just starting to see real rut activity. The last day we were there we chased screaming bulls from 545 to noon. She had a big bull at 15 yards at full draw but he stopped behind a few trees. While she waited patiently for the bull to clear a cow busted her. These last few days of the archery hunt should be good and the lucky rifle/muzzy hunters should have a great hunt. Good luck
