HuntHarder Report post Posted September 20, 2014 I have a few buddies all spread out this year with tags, and all say about the same. Overall pretty weak, but some great "spurts" where bulls will come alive for a day or afternoon. Then next day, nothing. Lots of large bulls still solitary with smaller bulls having the larger groups of cows. Good luck on helping out your buddy.

hoghntr Report post Posted September 20, 2014 Quietest elk hunt ive ever been on! I have had years where I have had to move camp so I could sleep at night but this year absolute silence 99.99% of time. Actually it is so quiet and peacful it is kinda disturbing. I have heard 2 bulls bugle on this hunt and 1 was behind camp in wrong unit so yes I would say next week will be rockin for you guys with bull tags! as for my wifey with a cow tag guess were back to looking for tracks cutting rds to know where to hunt. No we tagged mine but then had 3 guys start shooting at the elk that remained on feet. if they had not completely pooped on our hunt we would have had 2 down for certain. elkaholic Report post Posted September 20, 2014 I 'm getting the feeling that the Bulls are getting use to NOT BUGLING during daylight hrs I may be wrong but with the added pressure of scouting and numerous "party groups " out calling from every nook and cranny of the woods they have wised up a bit in the last couple yrs!!

bhuntin Report post Posted September 20, 2014 HA !!! I just got back from 2 week otc in Colorado, not a single bugle or mew ,and we were in a wilderness area ( Lizard Head ) saw 4 elk total, all on private land when driving in.People everywhere. quads everywhere. It gives you an appreciation for AZ. to quote on an outdoor writer....hunting quite elk in timber is like hunting crickets at noon with a slingshot. It definitely sucks for elk early..the locals don't even do that hunt..the people in Cortez I talked to all said they wait for the second and third otc rifle hunts ( Guess I should have listened to the guy who sold me my $ 611.00 dollar tag at walmart, yes a walmart employee) ..when they do bugle..It is beautiful country to be sure and you would think it would develop monster bulls just looking at it. There were deer everywhere and bear tracks on all the tanks, turkeys and blue grouse.they( Colorado ) manage the area for deer quality and elk for Quantity...I guess.I will not hunt there again
5guyshunting Report post Posted September 24, 2014 Back from 8 . Maybe 1 or 2 bugles in the morning , and then from 2 pm till 4 pm . Thirty minutes before dark they talk and are all herded together. I glassed 5 bulls with 12 cows . All the bulls were bugeling, but not rutting.
