I know a guy who has seen some big coues in that unit and even shot a few! There population is growing there not yet like it is right across the highway or river from there!

I saw some back in the mid 90s right along the side of hwy 169. I was so surprised there was whitetails there that I dang near wrecked my car slamming on the brakes and rubbernecking to see them. Good luck!

I always wondered how many people knew about them. I've got a quite few on trail cam and glassed up a few more, but have always been chasing elk when I saw them.

Ok that's what I kinda thought! I know they aren't thick in there but just curious.

I have hunted 19A a ton and you can find whitetails in the more rugged and remote areas. Currently I see about 50 mule deer per whitetail in this unit. Other units nearby like 21, 22, and 23 have way more whitetail and the ratio is more like 2 mule deer to 1 whitetail or even 1 to 1 depending on the year.

I think that it was a poor choice to allow 19A "any antlered deer" hunts in recent years. I have seen the population try to expand multiple times since the severity of the drought decreased but as soon as someone sees a coues buck in an easy to get to area they hunt the area heavily and only hurt the expansion of the population into areas with less predators.

IF you decide to shoot a coues buck in 19A I hope it is very old (like gray hair and sagging belly) and that you kill at least 30 coyotes or a lion so that a new generation of deer have a fighting chance. This is NOT a good whitetail area but an area that could become great if properly managed by hunters.

I hope this helps answer your question. Sounds like you must have a 19a rifle tag this year. This is going to be a great year for mule deer in 19a and you should be able to get a 4x4 if you have off for the whole hunt.

Some healthy muley bucks in 19a this year for sure. Thought the dry winter would mess it up, but we got rain in the first week of July and life has been good in 19a since. It aint hard to find coues in the unit, but it's a better unit for muley headbone in my opinion.

Seems azgf would put age restrictions on coues in19a If it would

Make or break the population in the unit or better yet like you said keep mule only
