fatfootdoc Report post Posted February 19, 2007 So my 2 kids just finished hunter safety and my 9 year old daughter aced the written exam so she gets put in for a chance at a trophy elk hunt up north, I hear that it is an awesome hunt and it is fully guided and all expenses are paid, I sure hope she gets it. . I think every kid under 12 that gets 100% gets put in, but she was the only one in her class(including adults) that got 100%. My 10 year old boy got 98% but my daughter has bragging rights. I am excited to put them in, I was not going to put her in but the effort she put into her test deserves it so hopefully we will have some good youth hunts to go on in the fall. AG Thats great to see more and more youngsters getting with it. Both my twins girls (10yrs) at the time aced the written as well. My third daughter turns 10 in November so It is going to difficult to find a class for her in that short of a span Just in case she gets her for Elk tag in December. fatfootdoc Report post Posted February 20, 2007 I told them both that if they did not pass they had to wait until my 7 year old was ready to take it because I was not sitting through the class again next year! So they both wanted to hunt this upcoming year so they studied for it. I would be happy with cow elk or bull elk for her, she will have fun regardless, and the meat will be good from a cow., I just hope she gets a chance to go. I am going home tonite and we are sitting down with the regs to see what they would like to hunt, I am definitely putting them in for the burros youth hunt and my son wants to hunt elk next year with my muzzle loader in 15, but I am not sure he is ready for that yet, of course with bipod and by using 100 gr instead of 150 gr of powder he could probably handle it. AG Congrat's to your kids! You might want to see if your 9 year old can even hunt this year. I started my 9 year old son in a course in Jan.07 & had to dropout half way through.I heard from a friend that we would have to retake the course if he didn't turn 10 by the last day. At the next class I asked the instructor & he also said that this was true & my son would not get certified for the class, I called the Game & Fish & they said the same thing.I guess I misundrstood this very important detail, but I think someone should have stood up at the first class & announced this as well.My sons birthday is not until Aug. & I was also told "good luck on finding a class that time of year, It's too hot for field day".Hopefully I can get him into a class sometime between July & Sep. because He was really looking forward to his 1st big game hunt & so was I! fatfootdoc Report post Posted February 21, 2007 you scared me! So I checked the regs and all it says is hunters under 18 have to have a hunter education card and be accompanied by an adult. The instructor knew she was 9 and still signed her certificate to mail away so hopefully that means she is good to go, she will turn 10 by the hunts anyway. Kevin Report post Posted February 23, 2007 fatty, You're right, all you have to do is pass the class, regardless of age, to hunt in NM. I had a seven year old get a 100 last weekend in my class (plus a 16 year old as well). The hunt is a guided cow hunt on Vermejo park for 10 hunters that get a 100 on the written exam and are under 18 year old. My teaching team has had 3 students in the last 2 years draw the tags and all had exceptional times! Congratulate your kids (especially your daughter) and slap yourself on the back as well.
