Guest Reynaldo de la Torre Report post Posted February 16, 2007 I work at a middle school and I am asking people to come in and give our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students a presentation about their carreers. I would like to have a guide come in. Are there any takers? We are the Center For Academic Success in Douglas Arizona. Thank you.

Hey Reynaldo, I admire what you are doing for those kids, epecially at that time in their life. I remember when I was in 8th grade, a counselor asked me what I wanted to do as a career.....I told her I wanted to be a professional hunting guide! I wish I knew then what I know now! I'm not sure being a guide is a good "career" decision for anyone! I love it, but I would NOT be able to do it "full time" if I had kids of my own or alot of bills. I am a very fortunate person who found a very understanding wife who lets me do this most of the year and bring home very little money! It is a great "hobby" but a very hard "career" to sustain and do it season after season. I personally don't know anybody in my profession that can do this as a career.......they all have a "career" job, or something else that they do during the off season that lets them have the neccessary time off during the season. Again, I am a guide/outfitter, but I would rather encourage a youth to go to school, find a "career" job, and then be a guide as a hobby during his/her time off. This is just my 2 cents, somebody else may have a different oppinion, just being honest. JIM>

Not that it isn't good to aspire to be a doctor or lawyer, or a biologist. I like to let kids know that whatever their favorite thing is ( as long as it is a legal and "good" thing ) there is a future in it - as opposed to "wondering if ", or worse yet, "I could never...". So what if a guy has a full time job and then guides on the side - that is muy bueno. I do it. But how many kids know that they can too? But I am greatfull for your unput coosefan !! COOSEFAN Report post Posted February 21, 2007 That makes sense. I have always believed in doing what makes you happy. Even if it means you won't make alot of money, at least your happy. It IS good to let kids know that people won't look down on them for not wanting to be a doctor or lawyer....a person of any age should be applauded for chasing their dreams and for doing what makes them happy. This makes sense. Best of luck to you and to those kids! JIM>
