Guest zia Report post Posted July 26, 2004 Just found this forum, thanks for the neat advice i've found already. My son (12) drew the December unit 31 antlered whitetail tag. We have the optics..swarovski, zeiss, tripods etc but I have never hunted coues deer so it's hard to impart any knowledge to my son. I am thinking about hiring a guide familiar with coues and hopefully the unit. I would ge grateful for any advice, guide reccomendations etc. My son while young is a capable hunter and has shot several big game animals and is a good shot to 300 yards. KGAINES Report post Posted July 26, 2004 http://www.coueswhitetail.com/bookstore/books.htm I don't know if you have the book or not but How to Hunt Coues Deer is probably your best starting point, I am sure you will get some help here too. I put the link above to the bookstore if you need it. Welcome to CWT.
TAM Report post Posted July 26, 2004 Zia, I also have a unit 31 December tag and know the area pretty well. In fact, the picture of the buck on all my posts is a buck from a unit 31 December hunt in 2001. How big of a buck does your son want to take? If your not looking for anything too big it wouldn't be hard to find a decent buck on your own. If your'e set on a guide then send me an email. A buddy of mine lives and guides down there and could help you shoot a wall hanger.
coues addict Report post Posted July 26, 2004 Zia I would reccomend either Duane Adams, Josh Epperson, Or Kirk Kelso, they all advertise on CWT home page. I don`t think you can go wrong with any of the above. Good Luck Coues Addict
az4life Report post Posted July 26, 2004 Josh has a couple Coues deer video clips and tons of great antler sheds on his website too, just to wet your appetite!

Guest Guest Report post Posted July 28, 2004 I live right by the prison in unit 31 and this year is not going to be a good year. The bucks I have seen have little antler growth.
zia Report post Posted July 28, 2004 Thanks for the input, too bad about the antler growth. This is a father /son hunt and even if we don't see a deer we always have a blast. I would like to tell all of you on this forum how thankful I am for your advice, there are some neat hunters out there, thanks for sharing. Mike
Arizona Griz Report post Posted July 28, 2004 (edited) Mike, all of the guides above are good but you really don't need one. Do some scouting especially on the west side of the unit out of Aravaipa Canyon. Try to get as close to the reservation as possible. Good luck. elkmaniac Report post Posted July 28, 2004 Mike, I'll tell ya where not to waste your time and that is on the North side of the mountain from the Swift Trail road all across towards West Peak. If you insist on hunting there, buy some black pants and shirts and use those for camo cause you'll blend in real well with all the burnt trees. Just kidding. Didn't know if you were aware of the massive fires we had on the mountain this year or not. If you are still looking for a guide, check us out at www.dcoutfitters.com. Might be able to work something up for ya. If you decide to do it on your own, and know how to glass, you will do just fine. Good luck. Chris
