2 things I learned this weekend...

Recommended Posts

Well more like 2 things I already knew, but needed to be reminded.

1. I may have grown up hunting from treestands, but I really don't like to sit still and quiet for a long time anymore. Especially in a hot blind with no coues cooperation. :(

2. Just like fishing, if you want to shoot doves don't take a kid dove hunting. Had a blast and shot a lot of cans and explored the desert, but no birds were harmed. Wouldn't have that one any other way though...he wants to go again. :D

I'm totally with you on both points. If I'm going to sit in a blind, I have to take a book to keep me occupied and from getting out and walking. I don't dove hunt, but the first couple of times I took my kids deer hunting and quail hunting, it was more walking and talking, but you are absolutely right: wouldn't have it any other way because they love to go with me regularly!

#1 That is 100% why I find it tortuous to hunt where I have to sit still for more than a couple hours. I used to carry a book, but then I'd get so caught up in the book that I'd miss stuff. Last winter I stopped carrying a book and I've gotten a lot better at seeing stuff. I HAVE to leave the book at camp or I will read it.

#2 GOOD JOB! I take my little one fishing and we end up doing all kinds of stuff that have nothing to do with fishing. It's the all-around experience that counts and exposing them to the outdoors. The other stuff comes together with time.

I sit tree stands for many years, sometimes 12 to 13 hours a day. I do read a good book but I have conditioned myself to look up and around after every paragragh. IMO it actually makes me more alert to the area and take a harder look at everything you can see and listen a little more intently rather than getting complacent with the invorment your sitting in. As mentioned nature is a great channel...for so long, but after watching the same 2 squirls chase each other for 2 or 3 hours it's time to put on another program and watch between the two.

Exactly what I do and why, except I may go 2-3 paragraphs depending on what I'm reading. Although when those magical hours (dawn and dusk) come around, I'm extremely vigilant.

Of course, when my kids are with me, there's always "I spy" and dirt drawings in the bottom of the blind!
