Desert Recluse

Recommended Posts

Glad it turned out ok. Spider bites are nothing to fool around with. I had a black house spider bite me on the back of the hand and it took a year for it to fully heal. Nasty suckers ! :(

When I first saw the topic heading, thought someone had spotted me out and about the sticks.

Scary stuff crawlin around out these parts. My dad used to have a shirt which pictured every creepy crawly thing here that bites, pokes and prods. Shirt read, 'Welcome to Arizona, now leave!;

Thanks for all the good wishes guys.

Is the staff from it not being cleaned properly or part of some issue with e a recluse bite?

I ask because it would be good to know what the most important aspect of caring for the bite is to avoid what you went through.

I lanced it with a sterilized needle and then put triple antibiotic ointment on it. The docs told me I was retarded, and probably introduced the Staph with the needle and then effectively sealed it in with the triple antibiotic ointment. I've done this to a million blisters before without issue. I typically lance them, let the skin dry, and then cut off the dead skin... Never had an issue. (The doctors told me this is a very bad practice though...)

In my opinion, the key thing I missed was that the skin was sloughing off instead of drying out. That should have been the red flag that made me realize I was dealing with more than a blister. I also had no reason to have a huge blister on my arm, so I should have thought more about the underlying cause.

As for proper spider bite care, you'll have to google that. I'm no doctor.

Nope... We fumigated, but my guess is I got bit in the shed or while we we were working on a truck that has been sitting a long time...

Got any pictures?

Since it's a family site, I'm not gonna post any pictures. Do a google image search for "brown recluse bites" and you'll see exactly what it looks like. It basically looks like an entrance wound of a 45 acp (i.e. a big friggin hole). It's finally healed enough you can't see the bone, but still deep enough to be nasty and hurt like heck.

Got bit by one two years ago. Mixed baking soda, salt and aloe Vera into a paste. Globbed it on the site. When it starts to dry it sucks up the infection. I have a dime size whole in my shin. It was perdy darn painful!

Don't feel bad, I wanted pics too, but then edited the response. Gory pics put tattoos on the brain.

I guess I'll count my blessings then that I was back to work with only a week off. Boss man didn't seem to understand how f***ing miserable I was today from a "little bug bite"...

I hope all your friends recovered well. And I'd fumigate your house if you've already found 2!
