azhuntnut Report post Posted January 30, 2007 Game and fish called me this morning to let me know I drew an any elk tag in 4b from Feb 2nd-28th. I can use any weapon, but will probably use a rifle since I have never hunted elk with a rifle before. Where do you think I should start? I have never hunted elk in Febuary, only in September during the rut. Do you think they will be down in the canyons, or up top trying to find some food? I need some advice, any would be good. DesertBull Report post Posted January 30, 2007 On those depredation hunts, doesn't the G&F tell you where they need elk taken from? I think if you called them, they will tell you right where the problem elk are at.

cmc Report post Posted January 30, 2007 The G&F WM should be precise in telling you where you can and can't hunt during this limited hunt and I doubt it's the whole unit. It's usually very specific area to concentrate on problem elk. Just so you know.... if you kill and elk on this trip and if you draw a tag from the upcoming draw than you will have to forfeit that tag!!!! 1 elk per year, not draw. You will not lose any bonus points though so that's a good thing if that matters to you. Now this being your first time, yes a rifle and I'd do a ton of research. At least you should be close some towns to get the meat processed. Hope for snow so you can get an idea of tracks and movement. Be wary of private property as these hunts are usually near it. Also if you shoot a bow than it might be wise to take it and let the G&F know you can hunt with a bow. They might put you in a area that's not good for rifle hunters and better your odds of harvesting an animal. Best of luck. cmc
bcoover Report post Posted January 30, 2007 I think a friend of mine had that same tag only in September. It is more than likely it is the same problem elk. Considering he didn't harvest one. I might be able to help, I was with him most of the hunt. P.M. me for more information.
cmc Report post Posted February 2, 2007 wait a second... I went up and helped out on a population mgmt elk hunt in 4B now that I think of it. It was up in the Joseph City area. It was a pain in the butt. Lots of gas and all we ever saw were the back end of two spikes running mach 5 away out of some serious tall salt ceder. It was just after Thanksgiving about two-three years ago. He signed the tag down to his son so I went up to help. Snowed like crazy the last day. At first it wasn't worth all the effort to go up but looking back glad we did. Good luck! cmc
