I would bet that a lot of the reason he is so excited is that he gets to go share that experience with you. Because he drew in the bonus pass (20%) phase of the draw. He didn't have enough points to be in the bonus pass for 12b, but he did have enough points for a bonus pass draw on his second choice. So, by the time he could have been considered for the other 80% of tags in the 1/2 pass of the draw, he had already been awarded his second choice. Thus, he never had a chance at the 12b tag because he listed a second choice that required fewer bonus points than he already had.

Your dad had enough points to draw 12a west early hunt this year in the bonus pass, he didn't have enough points for 12b west late to even be considered in the bonus round so G&F gave him his second choice. He drew that in the bonus pass. My dad drew that 12b west late tag with only 2 points, so it was obviously in the 1st and 2nd pass. 80% of deer tags are just luck of the draw.

There are basically 2 rounds of draws. The first round takes the top 20 percent of tags for each hunt code. The second round then does the random draw of 80 percent.

 

In your case, you did not have enough points for the first round for the 12b tag, so they went to your second choice. You did have enough points to be in the top 20 percent, so you get the tag.

 

You never got to phase 2 of the draw. Or the 80 percent random draw.

Hello everyone I'm new to this site and just wondering if anyone has any recommendations for areas in 12 aw. Myself and my dad drew the Early archery hunt which starts on the 22nd of August. The last time we hunted kaibab 12aw was about 10 years ago. Anything would help it's going to be a tough hunt for my dad anyways because he had a knee replacement and shoulder surgery in the beginning of the year but again anything would help.
