azyoung Report post Posted January 26, 2007 Just curious I have been hunting and messing around 23 country for a good 35 years and never seen mearns quail until last weekend. I jumped a covey near Young. Are they expanding their range or have they always been there? It looks like great mearns country just never seen them that far north in the state. azyoung
Kevin Report post Posted January 26, 2007 I spent the summer of 90 living in Young working for the FS. I can remember seing Mearn's one time between Young and Haigler Creek. Most of my time was spent traipsing around at night chasing spotted owls in the timber so my exposure to Mearns country wasn't much, but I know they were there back then. Kevin PS: from your name I'm guessing you live there?
azryan Report post Posted January 26, 2007 I have hunted 23 alot too...I spend a lot of time in and around young....I have also seen some small coveys of mearns...If you think about it...it makes sense that there are some there....they generally inhabit elevations between 4000 and 6000 ft and they love the oaks and tall grasses....I have jumped them a couple of times down in some canyon bottoms and on steep hillsides....It makes sense to me that they have moved there recently....its where the food is...and it is perfect habitat for them. azyoung Report post Posted January 26, 2007 No unfortunately I don’t live there – Yet! My last name is Young. I do have a good friend that lives there and we spend a lot of time in Young.I agree the country looks great for mearns but I have to admit most of the country I walk is more open cactus hills. We caught this covey off the 54 Rd. down in the oaks and my son was able to pull a double. I glad to discover some mearns a little closer to home. I just sorry the season is almost over. Thanks for the replies!
