looling for a coyote rifle

Recommended Posts

I was wondering what the best coyote rifle is, that does'nt make too much of a hole. I have been looking at the 220 swift and the 22 250 as my favorite choices. I dont want anything in a wildcat caliber. I want to use it for javies and possibly other small varmints like groundhogs etc. Any opinion is appreciated.

I like the .223 for the options. you wont lose that much velocity over the 22-250, but its easier on components and powder. And with a good load you still drop'm dead and save the pelt

.223

Ammo is cheap. The cheaper the ammo, the more you will shoot. The more shoot, the better you will be.

I'm a huge fan of the 22-250. I have one in the Remington Varmint model (essentially a small bore Sendero) and it's a laser. I shot a 20 shot group with it once just for fun and i can cover the entire group with a quarter, and that was with a gusting headwind. Also have had some amazing groups out to 400 yards as well. But i really think you can't go wrong with any of the calibers mentioned. All are very adequate for what you are looking for. The 22-250 ammo is more expensive as some others have said, but still my personal choice. I like the added range.

kimber 84m varmint. 22-250, leupold 4.5-14x40 varmint reticle, 50 gr ballistic tip. works great! rolled a running dog at 40 yards, and a jack rabbit at 415 yards

I also prefer the 22-250 I shoot hand loads. 40 Gr sierra hollow point with IMR 4064 not real fast. Shot yotes and bobcats with very little damage. I actually get full penetration with little expansion. The 40 Gr sierra is harder than your average hollow point. I have also shot several javelina and one Coues when I had rifle problems with my .300 win.

I will add something to this. I am heading over to the rez next month to try and find a lion, but I will be also hunting for coyote, bobcat, and fox. I have a .223 and .243, which one would you carry to take care of anything I see? Both are super accurate. David

if you're gonna be serious lion hunting and maybe shoot a varmint, take the .243 with 85 or 100 gr bullets. my favoritist coyote gun is whatever i have with me. but a 22/250 or 223 are real good and will never be improved on.

204 or 223. 204 is a great round and could take anything up to a javelina. 223 can take anything up to deer and ammo is cheap.
