What wildcat would you build?

Recommended Posts

Just built a 7 LRM. .672 bc, 175 lrab @3050 fps....

7 LRM would be very high on my list. Who did your build? What are some of the specs?

Craigs Custom Rifles in Oro Valley. 26" Brux, #4 fluted, Mcmillian Game Scout, Stiller Predator action. Working on the finishing touches. but it is shooting the 175 LRAB at about 3050 into a touch under MOA, with the Zeiss HD5 5-25x50.

i have heard 7 LRM tossed around but know nothing about it. what is the case like compared to say a 7 RUM? better barrel life than RUM's?

Case life and barrel life should be much better then the RUM as it operates at a touch slower velocity, with much less powder and pressure. My current load is 82 gr. US 869, but also 72 gr Retumbo gets me in the same ballpark for speed, just US 869 showed better accuracy potential.

Glad you enjoyed the shot, it was just a fun hunt!

another wildcat I would like to build if i can get enough other projects done to start another one is a 219 Donalson Wasp... just because its different. It was kind of the godfather you might say to what started a long line of more bench rest type rounds, but perform equally well for hunting too with great accuracy.

Have you guys ever heard of the 6.5 Prometheus? Over at Longrangehunting. That would be a round I would like to try.

I guess it depends on what you are calling a wildcat. I would go with a 6.5 or 338 for a wildcat since they are cartridges with somewhat limited options off the shelf. Currently my favorite caliber is the 7mm, seems to do everything well. 7mm RM does everything pretty well and I also have a 7mm Dakota. The 7mm Dakota seems to be VERY efficient, i can get 3000 fps out of 180gr bullet and it is not a massive Ultra Mag sized case.

Be prepared to spend a lot of time with your new wildcat and once you find a load you like spend a weekend and load a bunch of them. Once I get a load dialed in I typically want to load 50-100 at a time. More room for error if I am trying to hurry and load 20 more at a time and it is a pain.

Ya 20mm whatever, I have to put a cheeter bar on my 50 bmg loading press. The dies are 2 in in diameter and cost 10,000. for the carbide ones.

Very nice, the machining on the barrel is that for looks or is there some theory behind it?

Mostly looks and they are a little lighter.

The debate rages on in regards to stiffness and cooling improvements.

I was thinking of stiffness, I know the shot peen barrels are stronger for sure. Looks cool too, I may have to try something like that. Hoping to do a 7wsm next year after hunting season
