Heinz57 Report post Posted June 30, 2014 Went out with Dad yesterday to check a new trail cam and do some early archery season scouting. Was nice to just get out and spend time with him. No animals on camera over the weekend, but we did manage to find a couple coues sheds and a sweet deadhead. Haven't got around to putting tape on him yet, but he's a dandy. Any guesses on score? Check out the palming at the end of his main beam. Hoping his genetics are still running around! What would be the best way to clean up that deadhead and display it?
tjhunt2 Report post Posted June 30, 2014 Anytime anyone can get out with their dad in the woods or desert is a blessing and you hit the jackpot on them finds. I would say you had an exceptional day. Thanks for sharing. TJ
bigorange Report post Posted June 30, 2014 I'd give that deadhead to Cole and let the beetles do their thing...I assume they like deadheads too. And yeah that's a really sweet find!

Sneaker Report post Posted June 30, 2014 I just boiled and pressure washed this one. Then bleached. That looks great, I have a couple dead heads I need to do. What did you do to for your bleaching process? Looks great
bonecollector777 Report post Posted June 30, 2014 Don't use bleach. It looks good at first but slowly turns a weird grey color after a while. The best thing to use is hydrogen peroxide. Buy a few bottles to put into a little bucket where the whole head can be submerged. After about a day it's extremely white. Some of the skull cant be submerged without getting the antlers in the hydrogen peroxide so I usually take a little brush or something and every now and then brush it onto the part not directly in the liquid. Try to keep it wet with peroxide the whole time and it will work. Kind of a pain but looks good after.

What did you do to for your bleaching process? Looks great I used the product from sallys beauty supply and brush it on and set it in the sun. I cant remember the name of the product. I think it is creme vol. 40.

As far as antler bases , I coat them with vaseline it seems to work.
