Scope mount

Recommended Posts

So I put a new weaver super slam 2-10x42 on a standard barrel 243 bolt action. Weaver bases and one inch low weaver rings. When I look through the scope I can see the last 3 or 4 inches of the barrel

Is that unusual? I have 3 power scopes that don't do that. The scope is well clear of the barrel. I hate to put higher rings on it

Doesn't effect the reticle it's just down on the bottom of scope. I have not sighted in yet but be even with that adjustment I can't see it raising that much

By the way the scope is sweet. Very clear.

Make sure you didnt get MOA built into your rings. Sounds more like the scope is bad and they set the optics in with some built in MOA. I say plan on hunting out to 1000 and your good. If your scope looks parallel to the barrel from the side then most likely its the scope, if its tilted forward into the barrel then your rings are set with moa or they are not on right. Alot of barrels have two different thickness bases to accomodate for the difference in height where the bases mount on the barrel or action. Send out pics form the side and you will get plenty of answers.

Here are some pics. I now the base screws on the rings are on alternating sides but I can't see how that would effect it

The scope was new in the box from authorized dealer. The adjustment knobs are just normal knobs. They are like Leupold where you don't remove a cap you just pull up and make sight in adjustments and then push down. You can move the knobs back to zero after sight in

Thanks for any help. It looks level

That is strange, something has to be canting the back of the scope or the scope has to have an internal issue. Not many leave the factory with a serious issue like that so my guess is it is somehow higher in the back. Unless you have a level system like the weaver set I am not exactly sure how you can check this. If the bases are not MOA bases then they should basically be level.

I can see the front sight on my rifle through the scope at low power. That said, it looks like your rear base is higher that the front in the pictures. The rear receiver top on many actions is lower than in the front, M70, M700s etc., but that does not seem to be the case with that model action. You may have the incorrect rear base. Set it on a rest and pull the bolt out. Compare what you see down the bore with where the cross hairs sit. Having the rings reversed has no impact on anything other than looks.

I agree it looks like the rear of the scope is higher than the front to me. The main tube on the scope should be parallel with the action. If you have calipers just measure the bases and see if they are different.

MOA base is designed to lean the scope forward or down in the front to allow scopes with less elevation adjustment to reach out to longer distances. Most common is 20 MOA base.
