Dogs for Tracking Deer and Elk

Does anyone know the laws for using dogs to track wounded deer and elk? I know there have been threads on it but I couldn't find them. If I recall correctly you can use a dog as long as the animal is assumed to be expired, but if the animal is found to be alive (i.e. you jump it from a death bed) you have to stop pursuit with the dogs. Is this correct?
