Arrowsniper Report post Posted June 22, 2014 I was up scouting for elk ..... omg those dam flies/nats.....really tiny! Driving me and my dogs crazy! What, besides conventional sprays, can I use to stop/block them? I got bit on the legs near the ankles.... was that the black nats or chiggers?
Edge Report post Posted June 22, 2014 If you want a cheap fix, Avon's 'Skin So Soft' works great to keep away the pests. But if going afield smelling like a French whore aint your ambition, feed stores carry Pyranha flying insect spray. When I was fishing the bayous of east Texas, tried out the reloadable OFF clip-on repellent fan; it really works.
Chef Report post Posted June 22, 2014 +1 to what edge said on all three counts.
ThomC Report post Posted June 22, 2014 Chiggers start at your ankles and crawl up. They are in the grass. Some of the repellants are for your skin and some are for your clothes. For the no seeums that buzz around your head you need a fine head net.
Eagle mountain ranch Report post Posted June 22, 2014 + 2 what edge said, I wonder if its those darn " no see ums " also they make some stuff that's 100% deet strong stuff
cosninocanines Report post Posted June 22, 2014 I had great success with the Therma Cell electric repellant. Kept our sitting area in Alaska clear last summer. Reviews ran the whole scale from 1 to 5 but it worked for us. Walmart usually carrys them in the camping section.

Guest oneshot Report post Posted June 22, 2014 I just saw this in Popular Mechanics... Essential oils in catnip are 10times more effective then DEET... Rinse 2cups of stemmed catnip... Roll lightly with a rolling-pin, then place in a quart jar and cover with 3-4cups of mild rice vineger... Seal the jar and store it in a dark cupboard, shaking once a day for two weeks... Strain and put liquid in a spray bottle.... Spray on skin... Avoid cats...
IA Born Report post Posted June 22, 2014 X2 on the Thermacell. I got one halfway through my early elk hunt 2 years ago and it is awesome! You can even get the fresh earth cover scent wafers for it.

Snapshot Report post Posted June 23, 2014 Avon skin so soft /bug repellant. They say it works well for Tetse flies in Africa also. I haven't tried it yet.
Guest oneshot Report post Posted June 23, 2014 Skin-So-Soft does work good... I used to get a bug-dope in NY from a flyfishing shop, it wouldnt eat flylines like most bug repellants, comes in a green bottle and it has a frog on the label, I cant remember the name of it though hehehe... The best I used though is a product called "jungle juice", made in Belize from stuff out of the rainforest, the main ingredient is called "jack-butt root bitters" in a bees wax base... arizonaelkhunter Report post Posted June 29, 2014 Thermacell worked great for me last September elk hunting if you are sitting in a stand and not moving. Believe it or not rubbing non-scented dryer sheets work okay as well
MT. CAT Report post Posted June 29, 2014 I just came back from hunting hogs in Texas, our guide used cedar oil spray. Said the animals dont pick up on it. I will be trying it this year.
