ideas on a rifle for my daughter

Recommended Posts

Looking to get her her own rifle this fall. Thinking of a 7mm-08, a 257 Roberts or a 243 win.

Shes 15 yrs old, 5' 1" and 100 lbs. Primarily a deer and javi gun, possibly an occasional cow elk.

Any opinions or better ideas?

I bought my daughter (13) a savage axis youth model .243. Come with a bushnell 3x9 scope. It was 349$ at dicks sporting goods. Camo. The black model is a bit cheaper. Bought her this inexpensive rifle bucause you just don't know what a girl is going to do next. Let alone next year. If she gets into it I'll get her a nicer rifle. Until then. This little rifle shoots good.

Good luck.

Jimmy.

My daughter, Courtney is about the same size. She shot her first two deer with a 243win. When I realized she was hooked, I set her up with a 264 win mag with a muzzle break. It kicks lighter than her 243 did and she has killed both elk and deer with it. I agree with Jimmy. You just never know. I have loaned out the 243 to a couple friends just to see if their kid would even enjoy shooting let alone hunting.

I hope she gets hooked. Hunting with my daughter is the most enjoyable thing I do every year. Wouldn't trade it for anything.

I also say 243. I'm an above average sized white male and love mine, I'm sure your daughter will too!! Mine shoots very well outside 700 yards now, but for game I stick to 400. Just can't find the magic load to make it stable and shoot moa past 700 yet, 1000 will be next.

I agree with the .243 choice. Can pick them up pretty easily. I love mine and it's deadly accurate.

My 8 year old son shoots my 6.5 creedmoor and it can reach out further than 1000 yards and can kill at that distance. Great round no recoil.

.243 or .260... Mine have a .243 and we just finished a 6.5 x 284 build for them. They shouldn't need another AZ rifle now.

I would say a 243 25-06 260 are all good but because ammo can be found anywhere and ballistics are awesome 243 would be my pick when I have to do it agan

Look for whatever ammo/reloading components are more readily available. That's where I'd start.

I say the 243 or a 270 both will kill deer and elk.
