azcouesandelk Report post Posted January 16, 2007 Went out for the weekend and this is how it happend January 12th Got to the trailer and got organized and went to try and find a new area around 3 in the afternoon. Drive by a tank and notice alot of ducks and for only the second time in AZ I spotted wood ducks. Here is a picture of 1 of the males from around 300 yards. After a couple of photos we drive a little ways down the road and stop seeing a deer off the side of the road. Glass the ridges real fast I find pigs. It is about 4:15 at this time so I run up the hill in my tennis shoes, blue jeans and sweatshirt. Get up the hill and start my main stalk. I work for 30 minutes and end up 16 yards away from the first good size pig. I calm myself checking to see if any other pigs are closer and I count 11 pigs all together. I draw back and take the shot. My shot went high and to far back. I watch the pig run away and see him drop down and go through a wash near 500 yards away. At first I thought it was a gut shot but looking at the arrow I see hair and very very little blood just a small streak on 1 blade and on 1 fletching. I mark my spots and search til it is to dark to see anymore. January 13th Wake up and get up to search the hill again at first light. Search for another hour without finding any blood or the pig. At this point I am devistated. I want to keep searching but knowing my shot was not good and seeing him that far away and going strong I believe he is in fine health. I go back to glassing. I glass all day and turn up several small whitetail bucks and a few does. Did attempt to stalk a small fork and was able to get to 80 yards before getting busted. January 14th Wake up and go to same area where I got close to big whitetail week before. I glass a few minutes and find a small 3x3 and spike but they feed up over the mountain. Continue glassing finding a few does. Right before I decide to head to another spot I find a good 3x3 but it is spooked by something and runs up over the mountain top. I think illegals may have spooked him. For the afternoon I decide to go where I had my shot and see if I can locate the herd again. I glass for 3 hours turning up 3 does when I find a pig. That one pig turned into 17 pigs in the next 10 minutes. I plan my stalk and begin my climb. I get 70 yards from the pigs when 3 illegals come up over the ridge and spook the pigs down the hill. A quick call to border patrol and I am back to work. I locate the pigs below me and start to stalk again. I get to 80 yards when a truck pulls up behind mine and 2 guys get out throw binos up and grab there bows and run up the hill. I try to hurry up but the herd bust from the guys running up and I cannot get a shot off. The part that disappoints me is that the guys who busted the pigs are the same guys who busted the pigs from me on January 1st. Those pigs were in 36a and about a 25 mile drive away from where I was in 36b. I do not know if they were following my truck or not but I am not a happy camper about this. January 15th Wake up and go back to where the pigs were the night before. Glass for 2 or 3 minutes and locate a small fork with 2 does. I told myself at the begining of the day I was going for pigs only unless it was a monster buck. I keep glassing and around 8:30 I locate a spike and a doe on a distant ridge. A few minutes later here comes a nice size fork. Following the fork is a 80 class 3x3. I look it over and we decide to move around to the other side to get a closer look. I setup and glass only finding the fork. I continue glassing when all of a sudden I glass up one of the largest bucks I have ever seen. This buck was an honest 110 class buck, his beams come almost to the end of his nose. I plan my stalk and I am about to take off when in the wash below me I saw a tall, heavy, wide 4x4 muley. I try to get in on him but can only get to 60 yards and he just keeps up his walk and I could not keep up with him. I get back up to my perch and the big whitetail has gotten out of his bed and moves off to another area I am guessing. So we pack up and head home. Here is a pic of the big buck, sorry that it lacks quality but looking in the direction of the sun and almost a mile out will do that. You can see his mainbeams coming way out infront decent. Here is a really good pic of a doe I think. The doe was about 350 yards away That is my story so far and I am heading back down on the 18th and staying through the 21st. These will be my last days down in the 36's archery hunting this year so wish me luck.
