Cool find from this winter

Recommended Posts

;) It's been a while since I've had time to post a few pics from this past March. One early morning on March 3rd I went out to glass for bulls in a canyon in hopes of possibly finding some fresh sheds later on. I hiked out to the edge and before I set up my tripod I quickly scanned the slope below me with my binoculars and immediately saw a whitetail rack in the brush! I got the tripod set up and put the 20-60X80 Swarovski scope on it and at about 200 yards or so away it looked pretty cool! From the back it looked to be in pretty good shape and I couldn't really tell much about it but was pumped regardless. Not everyday I can go out and glass up a whitetail rack in the brush.

I continued to glass and glass the canyon and never even saw an elk or a shed. Well I stood up to regroup and realized there was one little spot straight below me and to the right I hadn't looked yet. As I hand-held the binos I instantly saw an elk shed sticking up out of the manzanita brush. I got behind the scope again and realized I was looking at the left side of a full skull! 2 skulls in one sitting, how awesome is that!?!?

So I took a few pics and tried to find a way off the bluff and head to the whitetail skull first of course ;) Took me probably 30 minutes or more to finally get to it but boy was it worth it!!

Soon as I picked it up and saw all the flippin drop tines I knew it was from the same buck I'd also glassed it's shed up and off of 2 years prior and about 300 yards away. Here's pics of that day as well!

Both the shed and the skull are nearly identical in size

The elk rack was just out of the bottom of the canyon and boy it was a mess getting there but worth it. No idea what killed it. It was tangled the manzanita pretty nasty though.
