buffhunter Report post Posted June 18, 2014 The good ole days of Mormon lake...... my best memories were during the original Bowhunter Happening! !!!!!! That was a great shoot go shoot a round or two in the morning then hit the big top tents fo check out all the new gear and on the last day get some unbelievable deals on some aluminum arrows. And in the afternoons go fish mormon lake or just play with my friends around camp..... and then in the evenings the adults would go to the bar to drink and dance while us kids would play out in the street...... and once in a while we would get to see some drunk fools fight in the street....hahaha the good ole days man I sure miss em........ oh ya and I almost fergot those awesome smoker rounds especially with aluminum arrows trying to straighten your arrow to keep shooting or when the tip broke off we would shove a rock in it to add some weight........ wow I can't get the smile off my face now!!!!!! 4Falls Report post Posted June 19, 2014 I would bet theres more elk around Mormon lake and the rim country now then there was in the 80s. Seems like I remember seeing deer everywhere and elk were a special treat. And big bucks too.

hntnIwlgo Report post Posted June 21, 2014 One of my absolute favorite places!!! My first Mormon Lake experience was about 40 years ago, back in our high school days, my now husband and I met at a 4-H event at a camp around there. I remember we could go to this one place at camp and look down over the lake. Any time we are in the Flagstaff area we go always go to Mormon Lake to check out the elk. One morning we were privileged to be in the right place at the right time to view a large group of elk come up, single file, out of the lake area, cross the highway and jump a fence to the meadow area on the mesa. What a treat. Just before sun up on another trip to view the elk, I said to my husband. “Those are some gigantic geese out on the water look at their wake!” After pulling off highway and checking with binos we found it was two cow elk swimming across the Upper Lake Mary. You could just see their heads poking out of the water. Now that was cool. Love this place!

Norteno Report post Posted June 24, 2014 The wife and I are invited to a friends place in Munds Park for the 4th. I want to take her to see some Elk. Does anyone know what the road is like from Munds to the lake? FR240? We will be in a AWD Rav4. The other option was going up to Flag then coming back down. Google maps shows them taking about the same amount of time (45 min) which is more driving than I wanted to do.
johnnie blaze Report post Posted June 24, 2014 Route B is much faster. You could always take the camp Verde way also. Go at 3-4am.....you might just hit one.

It takes you through the forest and stoneman lake. Never done route b before, is it similar scenery? I was a 2wd truck, roads were good and easy. Almost hit a few deer as well. Slamming he breaks
