TAM Report post Posted June 16, 2014 There really isn't anything "basic" about hunting Mexico. There is a fair amount of paperwork required on both sides of the border and if you don't get it right you risk going to jail. I wouldn't recommend doing it for the first time without having someone with you that has prior experience and is willing to walk you through the process. Beware... once you've got the process all figured out you may find it addicting!

desertsheep Report post Posted June 17, 2014 To answer a couple questions: The ranch you hunt has to have a UMA its basically a number that shows the ranch has been registered. The tags and rifle paper work must match up. You can not bring sheds/dead heads back across the border without a import license
rcdinaz Report post Posted June 17, 2014 There are a lot of steps: Ranch tags / paper work Gun license Vehicle license - truck, ATV's, trailer, everything needs paperwork Visa (I cant remember if this is what they call it but you have to pay to be there as well) Going through all the check points Policia / Army Enough copies of the gun permits to clear all the army depots and the policia. Stops can take 10 minutes or over an hour depending on who is working and how motivated they are that day. I am not trying to scare you off but you don't want to go and find you are missing anything or your cheap trip just got really expensive. If Ernesto sees your post he may be willing to give you a breakdown. I think he has written posts in the past on what is needed. He has helped a lot of ranches and hunters so he has the process down. You may want to search his posts. Obviously a lot of folks know how to do things as well but a lot are guides and get paid to do the work so they usually don't help for free. For the first time it would be very worth paying someone to help set things up and learn the process. Good luck! Hunt of a lifetime if you can do it right! TAM Report post Posted June 18, 2014 All the above is true, but don't forget the US Customs part either. You can just as easily get your hides & horns confiscated or possibly truck, guns, atv, binos, etc., huge Lacey Act fines, or even thrown in jail if you don't know what you're doing. But at least it would be an Americian jail
Evinruud Report post Posted July 9, 2014 Make sure your paperwork is right with the ranch. Make absolute certain that your Make model and serial number match your gun permit perfectly, one letter or number off = rejection and you can forget about your rifle. Find someone that specializes in border crossing americans and their weapons. If you do not speak spanish you are at a disadvantage, if you dont know exactly where to find the military base to check your gun with the mexican gov. you are at a disadvantage, if you dont know where to get your Visa you are at a disadvantage. There are bi lingual guys out there and this is all they do cross americans and their guns at the border, find one and pay the man, it will make your experience much smoother. Might cost around $100. Wilbow Report post Posted July 13, 2014 Does anyone know the procedure for declaring only a deer skull when crossing back into the US? I have an opportunity to hunt this fall in Mexico. I am familiar with the vehicle and tourists permits. I won't be traveling with a firearm either so my only concern is coming back with a deer skull. I understand the skull must be completely clean and free of meat/fur/blood. But as far as paperwork or tag what do I need and how do I obtain it?

As far as I know you have to have it tagged with all of the paperwork for the wildlife mgr at the border along with the paperwork form the ranch.

Leo Duran Report post Posted August 13, 2014 Hello my name is Leonel Duran, im from Chihuahua, Mexico, im an outfitter here in Mexico and hope i can help you with this...... whats the process on getting a rifle across the border as a non resident hunter you need to contract a mexican outfitter services to hunt in Mexico, he is the one who will get all the paperwork with the mexican army so you can bring your own guns with no problem, not a big deal just need a few weeks to get it done...there is no problem with any other hunting equipment do they stop you when you try to bring a dead head across? yes the most important is that you need to have a trophy exportation permit, specially at the U.S Border, your mexican outfitter need to do that too any information required please feel free to ask. best regards
