There is no 48 hour rule. If you continue to look for it and find it then it is considered a kill but if you give up on it and it is found later by you or someone else then it is a pickup. Congrats on finding it.

It sucks but it is really pretty simple, if you shoot an animal and it can't be recovered during the hunt once the hunt ends the animal now belongs to the state. The only heads you are allowed to legally have are those determined to have died of natural causes and that is determined by the state aka the local WM for the area. The original poster already stated he was sure the bear was the one he shot because the hide has a hole right where he shot it, so clean up the skull put it somewhere and every time you look at it you can sit back and remember the highs and lows from the hunt.
