hawkeye Report post Posted January 23, 2007 So with a preference point system we better start putting our kids in now and we can tell them that for sure before they die they will be able to hunt elk in AZ, but just not in the next ten years or so, but hey hunting is great tell your friends. In the preference point system we would lose young hunters and the way we are losing hunters now it is an even bigger problem for our future. At least with the bonus point system everyone has a chance, and at thats better than knowing that there are ten years ahead of you for sure before you get a chance. As far as deer goes in AZ there are leftover tags every year, if you want a deer tag all you have to do is apply down south for one of the early hunts and your odds are really good. If you want the Kaibab tag every year or the December Coues hunts then it might take a while. We aren't Colorado, we are AZ, do we want to be like other states and have land owner tags, have private game ranches, there are a lot of things that the AZGFD do that piss me off, but they are still better than most. If you want change get involved in some way or another, go to the AZGFD meetings and tell them what you think, help a group of your choice with habitat for our game animals, what we don't want is to sit around and wait for someone to fix it for us, because it will never happen. Everyone should have an opinion and nobody needs to agree with it, its when you quit caring that we lose, this is our sport and we need to fight for it. Here we go again. Why do hunters put things down before they even know details. "If it is different it must be bad". Do you think people in Colorado only hunt every 10 years? They get a preference point for not being drawn for the first pick. If they get drawn for their second or third choice they still get the preference point for not being drawn for their first pick. They are not penalized for hunting. But they still have a chance to draw a premium hunt if they desire. In Arizona if you want to hunt then you settle. So you have a choice either hunt the crap areas a lot or don't hunt for years and years hoping to draw a premium hunt. Oh and then don't overlook that, in the present system we use there is no oversight of the drawing by any one.
HEADACHE Report post Posted January 23, 2007 Sometimes I just like to join in and piss and moan because in 9 years I have only got one archery Elk tag. . . . it was my first choice in 7 . . . I always put in for archery and muzzleloader in 6 and 7 . . . . seems like I have bad luck ? ? Maybe this january-February thing will stir up some luck for me. I have gotten one deer tag in six years. . . have to go archery every year which is still cool, I love archery. . . and two turkey tags in five or six years. . . . Skunked on antelope though. . . I would hate to see "trophy" units or premium hunts draw so much more money . . . that would make it impossible for some of us "serious" hunters who can't afford such luxuries to do any hunting! If they make one unit a trophy unit, whats to stop them from making five or ten of them "trophy units??" Give an inch take a mile thing. If anything is attached to a Dollar. . . then it will soon become corrupt. My two cents brothers.

In Colorado you get a bonus point if not drawn for your first choice. If you are drawn for your second or third choice you get to go hunting but you still get a bonus point and can keep trying for the choice units. Eventualy you will get a tag there because in a preference point system the people with the most points will get the tags. I have hunted Colorado a couple of times but not enough to accumulate many points. That is the only fair way to distribute tags. This bonus point system is a crock. How do we know how it works? Because they say so? No proof and no oversight. Sure is funny how some people get tags year in and year out, and some never get a tag. I am sure on the whole it is on the up and up, but if they want to make sure a certain person got a tag it can happen and there is no way to prove it happened. Sure is funny how certain people get some of the premiere tags more often. Money makes a difference. It could be just luck but, why not prove it? Just like you said when big money is involved corruption exists. "ABSOLUTE POWER CORRUPTS, ABSOLUTELY"
