Big lion track

My hunting partner and I did a little hunting in 36C on Sunday. After a great morning we drove up to the road that heads west to the Baboqivari(sp) About one mile before you get to the white fence that says no hunting we saw this print along with a few more that were smaller in size.

 

 

 

The leatherman wave measures 4 inches across.

 

Is this a big lion track? Average??

This track looks old(er)

 

It also does not have the oval shape of a Coyote track and to me it looks wider that it is taller.

 

A 4 inch wide Coyote track??

I don't think it was a coyote, I think it may have been a large dog. From the photo you took in that kind of soil it looks identical to a track my large blueticks would leave. The one thing in the photo that does look feline is the heel pad, it almost seems that there are three impressions there, but it is hard to tell. The one thing that tells me it may have been a dog is the relation of the back toes compared to the heel pad. To be honest I don't know what made the track, do you have any more photos? If it is a lion track, let's go put him in a tree.

I have seen alot of hound tracks back in by Elkhorn Ranch, we have also seen a few lions in there as well. There is a fella who runs dogs in the Elkhorn, I think the lions frighten the DUDES that ride all over the hills in that country and they try to control them in there.

It is hard to tell, but that looks more like a dog track to me. The toes don't look quite right and the pad is not big enough in proportion to the toes.

I posted a pic of a lion track I found on a road about 2 years ago ( lost it now) using a Dollar Bill for reference. The track was nearly the width of the bill which is 6 inches.

I agree that your track loks more like a dog but if it were a lion, it woudl be on the smaller sie I think. I'm No expert on them either, but wait till Josh replies... I think he might have seen 1 or 2 of those tracks before and just might be able to give a bettter opinion.

Sure looks like a canid track to me. PRED8R posted an excellent link that gives a good overview of how to tell a canid track from a felid track. Drawing an "X" through the pad is a great way to distinguish them. You can use that method to see that your track is a canid while the photo hunter4life posted looks like a felid.

 

I have added a mtn lion track with a bullet next to it, a bobcat track with a quarter next to it, and a photo of a dog track in the mud for your comparison.

Ol poochie woochie! The pad on a lion has the 3 humps in the bottom of the heel like the one that hunter4life posted. Last year I drove clear out of town cause a guy told me about this GIANT lion track he'd seen in a wash. I got clear out there and found where he'd seen it and it was a huge dog track. Nice to see you're watching out for tracks though!!! Most people don't have a clue about watching for tracks.
