turkeyneck Report post Posted May 18, 2014 Pros and cons of 22 mag versus 17 HMR?
Couzer Report post Posted May 18, 2014 I had the same question as you a few years back and decided on the 22 mag because of the knock down power at the 100 yard distance it has over the 17 hmr. Although they claim the 17 HMR is much more accurate than the 22 mag. I ended up buying a CZ 455 in the 22 WMR bought every type of ammo out there to try to get the best groups. My best group was just over a inch until I found some Fiocchi WMR ammo in a pawn shop in globe. It was about half the price of the CCI, Remington, and Winchester ammo I found. To my surprise it shot the best, 1/4 groups at 100 yards.
camoremi Report post Posted May 18, 2014 I have a savage .17hmr and it is super accurate. I just shoot for fun. But it is a very flat shooting round. Borrow one from somebody and do a test
HuntHarder Report post Posted May 18, 2014 I have owned both, I would choose the WMR over the HMR. I think my 17hmr has too much drift in wind, and if I am shooting at prairie dogs and miss, there is a lot of the times that I am unable to see where I missed with the HMR. Such a small bullet does not throw a whole bunch of dust. I know you are not suppose to plan on missing, but take the 17hmr in the wind, and it is going to happen. As far as damage, I have taken quit a few foxes, and both seem adequate. I really want a semi-auto 22 WMR, but Ruger apparently can not figure out how to make one that doesn't crack!!
