macknnc Report post Posted May 11, 2014 In 1979, Pedersen Hunting Magazine put out a Jack O'Connor special, one year after he died...I guess they call it a 'book' though it is actually special editon of the magazine made up of ariticles written by Jack during his time at the magazine.. One of them is an article on the Coues which O'Connor refers to as the 'Arizona Whitetail, which makes a lot of sense since it is an Arizona deer..except.... yes the Coues subspecies is in AZ..and along a western strip in southern New Mexico...and in Mexico..but Jack says he also saw them in 'the Glass and Chisos Mountains of the Big Bend of Texas" Now this was news to me. Every range map I checked showed the Coues nowhere near Texas...but this morning I finally found one that shows it might be just barely possible...just barely..in the slightest southwestern corner of Texas... Can any one confirm this? Or did Jack hold a too long conference with another Jack (Daniels) before writing that?
dustin25 Report post Posted May 11, 2014 Coues only stretch as far east as western new mexico, the whitetails in Texas are a different subspecies
muledeerarea33? Report post Posted May 11, 2014 Maybe back when that article was written they were in east Texas? Now a days I don't believe so.
Flatlander Report post Posted May 11, 2014 Could he have been referring to the Carmen Mountain subset?
macknnc Report post Posted May 12, 2014 Flatlander..I was wondering about that too... but the Carman Mountain subset seems further east than the 'accepted' Coues range, and O'Connor's locating them in Texas's Big Bend puts his group, whatever they are, well west of the Carman Mountain whitetail. I was, to begin with, of the same opinion as dustin...but again, though most range maps on the Coues I have seen agree with the generally accepted wisedom...AZ, Mexico and a strip in SW New Mexico, that one range map I found yesterday is still bugging me..(naturally I can't find it today...though I plan to continue to look) and that map does indicate it was, at least, just barely possible... But man, this is really bugging me...
dustin25 Report post Posted May 12, 2014 If there are coues in Texas its the best kept secret in hunting and you should keep it to yourself! I'd give anything for my own private coues-holding mountain range!
oz31p Report post Posted May 12, 2014 Could he have been referring to the Carmen Mountain subset?I have always wondered if our coues and the Carmen mt white have a similar relationship to that of the barren ground caribou and the mountain caribou
