capoeirajosh Report post Posted May 10, 2014 Slowly acquiring backpacking equipment and am looking to get one of the jetboils. My question is, which one to get? It looks like there are a bunch of different models. This will be for backpack hunts and backpacking in general. Will be using it mostly for the mountain house meals and coffee. What do you suggest?? cohofishing Report post Posted May 10, 2014 I have the older, heavier model. Been using it for over six years. I like it so much that I use it even if I am camping by the truck. It is a little heavier than other stoves but the reviews on it by other hunters were great and I have no complaints. I would love to up grade to the flash cooking system carbon. At 14 oz, it is like 7 oz lighter than my older one. Can't go wrong with a jet boil Brent
oz31p Report post Posted May 10, 2014 because of weight and moving parts I chose to go with a ever New titanium alcohol stove no moving parts no seals ,boil 2 cups in 4 minutes
STOMP442 Report post Posted May 10, 2014 I picked up an aluminum one on eBay for about five bucks and it works awesome. Fill it half way with heet and light it, less than ten minutes later you have boiling water. Best part is that it only weighs like 3oz and fits in a small pocket. 8OWHUNT247 Report post Posted May 10, 2014 The Jetboil 'JAVA' is the one I roll with. It comes with a coffee press.

I found denatured alcohol boils significantly faster than heet. And its cheaper
DesertBull Report post Posted May 10, 2014 Everclear works too and you can pour a little in your coffee.
STOMP442 Report post Posted May 11, 2014 I've tried that too but it never seems to stay lit for me. The heet has never given me trouble once its lit and why I prefer it.
capoeirajosh Report post Posted May 11, 2014 How is the igniter on the jetboils? I see that there is one without the igniter as well?
Guest oneshot Report post Posted May 11, 2014 I've used most every backpacking stove made, I got rid of them all and just use a 2hour "sterno" can, quick, no mess, no fuss, a small stack of stones for a base and your good-to-go...

Guest oneshot Report post Posted May 12, 2014 Depending on altitude, (above 7000ft. any stove will take longer to boil water), useage, (just coffee water in the morning and one meal at night) one two-hour can will last me a few days...

WampusCat Report post Posted May 28, 2014 I have the flash and I dont leave the truck with out it. I love it and so do my buddies. They even bought their own fuel cans to use with my jet boil last season lol. I have a bad habit of sleeping at my glassing point. Making hot coffee silently without a fire makes the amazing Arizona morning views while glassing that much better. I have tried and made several alcohol stoves. They work fine but the real issue i had with them is the fuel. No matter what I stored it in inside my pack, it always seems to leak. The sealed cans from Jetboil and similar are just too convenient. My friend cooks in his but I just heat water and use instant coffee so there is never any clean up. Make coffee in my mug and pour hot water in the mountain house bags. Awesome! I ended up going with the flash java. Brought it out on my turkey hunt. I LOVE THIS THING!! So quick and convenient. Makes coffee so friggin fast, haha. Very happy with my purchase and can't wait to use it on my upcoming hunts.
