Cast Away

Recommended Posts

My fiancé is a 2nd grade teacher at an elementary school here in the east valley. The first Friday in May, her school's PTA hosts a spring carnival where teachers host booths of their choice. This year, we hosted "Cast Away!"

I set up 5 fishing poles with mostly zebco closed faced reels, I set out 3 kiddie pools (with vegetation and the Heron confidence decoy for realism), and the line of kids started backing up!

The look on some of these kids faces to just use a fishing pole was priceless. We ended up getting 115 tickets, with a few kids going more than once, I would say we had at least 100 kids that casted a line.

of the hundred kids, I asked each one if they had casted before, about half/50 said yes.

of the 50 that said yes, I offered to either help let them try all by themselves, about half/25 opted to try it themselves.

of the 25 that tried by themselves with no assistance, I'd say maybe 4-5 kids successfully casted without help.

of the 4-5 kids that could cast, 2 of them were absolute ringers.

Great kids all around, by the end every kid from ages 2-10 had made a successful cast at a target (not necessarily in it).

We (3 of us) were kept very busy for 3 straight hours. There was a line the entire time and we heard several kids and parents tell us at the end of the night that they just couldn't make it over with the wait, we were in high demand. Several kids, in completely isolated events, asked me if I could bring real fish to catch next year or where their parents could take them fishing. And, the bobbers and soft plastics were the first prizes to go. Clear as can be, Our future wants to fish and participate in the outdoors!

Great job with your set up. It is nice to see that kids are still kids when it comes to fishing. Love it!
