macknnc Report post Posted May 2, 2014 So my next question what would be the best unit? Keeping in mind the following; It will be a rifle hunt. For a second Coues I have not problem using my flintlock or bow, for the first onel, I think my .270 offers challenger aplenty to a North Carolina boy. Neither am I gadget guy. Binocs, and a smallish GPS unit would be about the extent of it...Backpacking is something I am going to come back to in a day or two...(I have, in the back of my mind, a 'new' hunting techinque which I will discuss in a couple of days...) And though of course a B&C deer would be wonderful, all I would really want is a good solid 'representive' head...not a spike or a forkhorn, but something that a Coues hunter visiting from the West, seeing it would nod and say 'nice buck' ... So what unit? (I'm basing all this on Duwane Adams book if that helps any..)
Elkaddict Report post Posted May 2, 2014 The highest density of Coues are in the units south and east of Tucson. With plenty of huntable populations in the central mountains of AZ. Pick up a set of 15's, you're going to need them. Dewaynes book is spot on, he lives in San Manuel, coues in every direction from his place.
PatrickJr Report post Posted May 2, 2014 all i will say is that if you dont draw, you can pick up a leftover Unit 33 Muzzleloader tag that goes for either species......but the 36s are really good for finding "representative" deer, and they are quite plentiful, they do have big deer but of course they are harder to find.
ylclaret Report post Posted May 2, 2014 I would say one of the 36's as well. The great thing about those units is this there are a lot of deer and your chances of getting a solid 3x "representative" are very good. The other plus is if you don't get drawn for the exact hunt you want, there are always left overs in those units that you can just buy OTC, they just might be for a different time period. If I am available at the time of your hunt I wouldn't mind helping you out, and I'm sure there are many others who feel the same. I'll take just about any excuse to go glass for deer! Let me know if you need an extra pair of eyes, or two or three extra pairs, I could probably round a brother or two and maybe a buddy.

I agree. My opinion is put in for the hard to get (December) tags and build points. If you don't get drawn pick up a leftover tag for one of the 36's. Lots of deer down there if you just want to get a good Coues representation for the wall. Plus there is always the chance of glassing up a big buck at first light on the early hunts too. Flatlander Report post Posted May 2, 2014 Shelling out 2k for binos may not be a wise investment for an eastern guy on a once in a lifetime trip. Checkout optics4rent or Ross outdoors for rental rates on high power glass. As far as units, they all have deer and 90" bucks are killed in every single one. If you are hunting solo the border might be more adventure than you are comfortable with. A good rule of thumb is that units that start with a 2 probably have lower densities and units 34+ are a little more adventurous due to the border.

Wrk2Hnt Report post Posted May 2, 2014 Even a good pair of 12's will do. Most of the time I use the 12's to find the deer then use the 20's to put antlers on them. macknnc If you are interested in hunting down south I would recommend 36A just because that's where I spend most of my time when I have to pick up a leftover. I'm sure my self and plenty of other CWT members would share some information with you or even help you get your first Coues. A lot of us get just as excited watching and helping someone else harvest an animal as if it were our own hunt. I would figure out where you want to hunt, do some research, and start going thru the forums for information then start talking to people. PM me if you have any questions and I'll try to help you out. The good thing is your app isn't due until early June so you have some time to get it all figured out.
