Youth Turkey Hunts

Recommended Posts

I would like to take the time to wish all the youth turkey hunters the best of luck. There is no doubt there is going to be a lot of excitement in a few hours of me typing this. Just couldn't sleep thinking of all the fun that is going to take place today.

Thanks to all you adults who have taken the time to get the boys and girls out there in the woods.

Thanks to all the volunteers in all the Youth Turkey Camps for their hard work and dedication in making this one of the best experiences ever for the kids.

With out the help of all the different organizations and the help of the azgfd these camps wouldn't be available. Please join one or two and show your support

Working for a Water Treatment Plant means 24/7 and this year I choose to work Sat and Sun so the other guys could be home with their families this Easter weekend. Believe me when I say I would rather be in the woods volunteering my time but it's just as important that these parents be with their kids to show and teach them the importance of Easter and what it truly means.

Can't wait to see all the pictures. :)

I just wanted to give Little Creek Calls a big thank you as he has organized to take 5-6 youth out this weekend to hunt birds. He doesn't really let others know he does this, I hunted with him this last week and he mentioned he took vacation time off from work so he could help out! Humble guy right there.

Yeah, Ammon really is a nice guy that makes great calls. He called me last week to give me some spots in 3c. Thanks to all helping the kids and good luck.

It was a good turnout and few are hunting Sunday. Little creek calls sound great. Will have to get some. Plus a local business.

Oldest boy shot a young jake at about 6:30 opening morning. Turkeys weren't very vocal all weekend. Gobbles coming out of the roost and off and on till about 7am then they shut up. Didn't hear or see a single hen. The one in the pic was one of 6 jakes bachelored up. Going back up on the 9th so the youngest son can get a second chance to fill. Hope the hens will be hot in a couple of weeks.

Set my box call on the back tire of the truck and forgot about it. Ran it over! Little Creek just got an order!

I just got back from a week off work and 5 days of hunting with friends in NM and youth in AZ. I did allot of field testing with the new boxes. You will be receiving a walnut box that called in 2 birds, one in NM and one in AZ. I will be posting photos of birds later but in in 5 days of hunting 6 birds were harvested by youth, friends and 2 for myself in NM. I helped with at least one killed bird a day (4 days in a row) until yesterday, the cold weather and hunting pressure made it difficult but still fun. Hope everyone is having as much fun and success as we did.

Used your calls this weekend, and they did a great job. We had a few FUBARs, but that's just hunting. The calls were great. Look for a PM from me. That diaphragm is, as Guy Fieri, would say, "out of bounds". Had more runners right in with that than anything, but switching between the diaphragm and the slate just seemed to keep them going all day.

As another member pointed out, hunting turkeys is a lot of "coulda, shoulda, woulda..." Seems you pile mistakes on top of eachother, but learn from all of them.

Looking forward to getting the calls.

I have a question about the turkey behavior we saw this weekend. Hens were quiet and jakes/toms were herded up. Pre mating. post mating, or maybe weather related?

To me it still seems a little like pre mating. We also saw some large bachelor groups and also most flocks with hens had at least 2 and up to as many as 4 toms with them. Didn’t see any flocks with just one tom which would be a normal breeding flock. There might be some breeding going on but they still seem to be figuring out dominance and pecking order.
