Will turkeys still be hot?

Recommended Posts

I have the late may 2-22nd hunt in 12A this will be my first ever turkey hunt and wondering if they will still be calling? I won't be able to get time off to go until the end of the season may 16-18. Curious if I should work on calling or sitting water! Thank you!

Will they still be hot in Unit 1? :) My first shotgun hunt for them and I'm pretty excited.

IMO the gobblers with the hens are easier to call later in the hunt!!!! I like the later hunt, because all those hens start laying eggs and peal away from the flock in the middle of the day. That Gobbler becomes very lonely and when he hears a hen call he will come a running in wanting to "service" them, :-)!

Thanks! Gives me some hope. Most say the calling dies down in the middle of the day so would you say later in the hunt it actually is better in the middle of the day? :)

I killed one this AM and he was real hot on the action. Called him in at 9:00. Lot of fun

Don't get me wrong, the beginning of the hunt is really good as well because they are all going crazy. Lots of the smaller birds will be shot in the beginning hunts, we shot long beards this year but they were only about 2-3 year birds. There are some real big boys out there! These big boys are generally with the hens because they have already fought off the smaller jakes and Toms. The hens will allow the Tom to service them multiple times, and he is always looking for some action. So when the hens start laying eggs and sitting on them, it leaves that Tom all alone in the afternoon 12-4pm, which can be prime time to call that lonely Tom in. I'm not an expert, but enjoys Turkey hunting a lot.

But yes I think the younger birds become quiet as the hunt continues, but those Big Toms can be easily called in.

I'm wondering the same thing. I'm thinking about getting one of the OTC archery tags that starts May 9. A little late in the season for sure, and the OTC youth hunt in Unit 1, 27 etc., had a very high success rate from what I've seen.
