Protecting an elk mount

Recommended Posts

I am going to have to put my house on the market with in the next couple weeks. This means my most prized possession, my elk mount 😄, will have to go into storage until I find a new place. Does any body have any experience storing an elk mount? My plan as of right now is to wrap it in plastic and tape the seams. Any other suggestions? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Give it to a friend to put up for the time being. Storage could result in bugs etc. Imagine opening the plastic and seeing hair everywhere. I wouldn't do it man. I'm sure there is somebody willing to display your trophy. IMHO:)

+1 to have someone else store it....unless it is an air conditioned storage unit. if it is just the antlers go to home depot and buy the foam that you wrap pipes with and cover your antlers with that.

When we had to store my dad's mule deer mount, we framed out a box big enough for it with 2x4's and actually hung the mount in the box, as if it were on the wall. I can't remember what all else we did, but you could try this, and maybe put packing peanuts in it just in case and wrap the whole thing in shrink wrap when you are done. I agree, that just having someone else hang it up for a while is probably best but if you can't do that, this might be another option to consider.

I am "baby sitting" my buddys elk mount, as he is between houses. I think it is the way to go. Check local hunting/gun shops to see if they will hang it in their shop. If you have to store it in plastic, moth balls may be a good idea. The best advice would probably come from a taxidermist.

If you are close to Sportsmans warehouse, give them a call. They can display your mount for how ever long you need.

I gave mine to a friend when I got divorced to have above his fireplace till I could get things back together. A few years go by and I buy some property and plan on building a cabin. I give him a call and he says he sold it at a garage sale! Be careful who you give it to.

That's the opposite of a friend. Jon, whereabouts are you located? Any pics of the mount?

I would not recommend putting it in a storage unit unless it is temperature controlled like some have already mentioned. High temps and mounts do not go well together. Best bet is at a friends house.
