Red Rabbit Report post Posted July 19, 2004 Judge Broomfield ruled that AZ G&F must fix the draw immediately, and not next year as G&F petitioned. Thus, the commission will issue another 805 bull elk and deer tags on top of those issued in the original draw. http://www.azgfd.com/artman/publish/article_126.shtml

Guest Ernesto C Report post Posted July 20, 2004 Can some body help me please? By giving out more permits, aren't thos units going to be over hunted? If we want quality trophy hunts I wont be sorprise if in the future we go to 3 or 4 pointer or better in those units trying to gain some quality deer/elk from there. Any body?? May the Lord bless me and you always. Thank You. Ernesto C.
bullwidgeon Report post Posted July 20, 2004 This is a one time fix Ernesto. Next year it will not be done. That being said, Pete Cimallero (I am sure I probably spelled that wrong) from the Arizona Deer Association did say he was disturbed by the increased amount of muley tags on the Strip this year in his speech to the commission. Pete usually knows what he is talking about and is very active in wildlife conservation in this state. So in short, yes, this does probably strain the resource this year a little. The different regional offices had this plan run by them on Friday and they determined that no significant long range biological impact will result from the increases this year but I have my doubts about certain units. I have never been to unit 10 but they added alot of bull tags to that unit in particular. 116 extra tags to be exact, so 116 bulls could be killed there this year that normally would live to be lion food or grow another year and I would think that would negatively damage the herd for a few years, but what do I know. Probably alot of those tags will go unfilled though because they are for the late hunt and I don't think the late hunt has very high sucess rates. Anyways, hopefully by next year we can all figure out something a little better. It is important to make as many commission meetings as possible if not to speak, then to show your support and keep track of exactly what will be going on come April when this process starts all over again. az4life Report post Posted July 20, 2004 I completely agree that it is going to be tougher for folks drawn in one of the "bonus tag" hunt areas to get trophy deer and elk. It will likely take a couple years to gain back the Game we will lose. What we have lost in terms of the "Big Picture" is in-calculable. This ruling has delt a major blow to hunting. I just pray the 10th circuit court finds for Wyo in theri case. Then we may have a shot at over-turning with the Supreme court.

bullwidgeon Report post Posted July 21, 2004 (edited) Lark, I looked and looked but I didnt see anyone I thought was ugly enough to be you and Allen . I see you and your dad drew 28 general, congrats. Just make sure you two flop big carp and leave the coues for my December tag there . No seriously, I got there a few minutes late just as people were walking into the meeting. I had a green and white Hawaiin shirt, shorts and a green hat on. I was suprised they offered the extra tags, but I have a feeling they are going to be like a lazy old mule going forward. They are not going to decide anything unless the public shows up and bugs them constantly about next year. Much like most state agencies they seem reactionary for the most part, not proactive.
