BUGS

Ah yes, the botfly!

I used to do some field work with a mamologist named Ruffner. Every once in a while we would catch a field mouse with a botfly larvae that was almost as big as the host! Poor little fellers.

I've seen a couple of dozen of them suckers fall out of the throat of an otherwise healthy 90" buck taken from 6B.

They really are disgusting the way they pulsate to move around.

I'm not sure what they are, but I've seen my taxidermist pull them out of the nose and sinus cavities of bucks I've shot in the past. He says he sees them all the time.

The first and only time I have seen them was from my brothers mulie buck from up in the Bab. We were buchering the deer and they seemed to come from the sinus area. A cattle ranch owner said they were common in cattle too.

Is this some thing that is seen in the colder climates or only during the winter???

I too have had them crawl out of rabbits. I was intending to eat the bunnies but freaked and threw them in the trash.

DONT KNOW IF THIS REALLY PERTAINS TO YOUR SPECIFIC QUESTION, BUT LAST YEAR WHEN WE WENT TO ALASKA FOR A CARIBOU HUNT I WAS INTRODUCED TO TAPE WORM CYSTS. TALK ABOUT SOMETHING YOU DON'T WANT TO SEE IN YOUR GAME MEAT...YUK!!! THEESE PARASITES ARE SIMILAR AND LEAVE LITTLE WHITE PUSS NODULES IN THE MUSCLES...YUMMY!!!!! :P I DID A BUNCH OF RESEARCH ON WEB ABOUT THEM AND KEPT COMING BACK TO THE SAME WEB SITE...ALASKA G&F DEPT. ANYWAY THEY ARE HARMLESS AS LONG AS YOU "FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS" I POSTED A LINK TO THE DISEASE INFO PAGE FROM ALASKA G&F, THEY SEEM TO HAVE JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING LISTED THERE WITH SOME GOOD PICTURES ETC. HOPE THIS HELPS WITH OTHER PARASITE QUESTIONS OTHERS MAY HAVE. I FOUND IT VERY INFORMATIVE!

I've seen them nasty SOBs in most of the bucks I've killed from unit 22. Freakin nasteeeeee! I had about 3 or 4 of them crawl out of the nose of one head that I was about to boil. They crawled out on the counter when I lived at my Mom's house and she saw them too. She didn't appreciate me having something like that in her house and esp on her kitchen counter. LOL!!!

Can you imagine having those bastards in the back of your sinuses? I'd be shaking my head like a deer too if I had them.

Now you know the reason a deer will just take off running and you are wondering what spooked him. It was the sound of one of those knoking on his ear drum from the back side.
