anybody ever kill an elk in 2b?

Recommended Posts

I have spent a lot of time in that unit, and killed a small 6x6 the only time I hunted there. Went back twice with friends and saw only one bull one year and zero bulls the next.

Be prepared to go for days without seeing even a cow elk. Scouting doesn't help much, other than to learn the roads. As someone said, the elk move around a lot in 2B. One day they are somewhere, and they're someplace else the next. Add to this, much of the best elk country is private land and it's locked up.

There's a reason why it's called a "limited opportunity" hunt.

It's a good unit for varmint hunting, though. You'll see more coyotes than elk.

Never hunted this unit but I was on a hunt on the other side of the fence in NM and I could tell you if people don't think there are big elk in there they are mistaken I saw many big bulls go back and fourth from AZ to NM as far as accessibility I'm not sure. I had a friend and outfitter call me before the draw and try to get me to put in with him on this hunt (I had 11 points he had 3) and told me when we draw he would have his guides guide us and provide everything for free so he obviously thinks pretty highly of this hunt.

You can find elk. We find many good bulls every year hunting deer in this unit. Me and a buddy of mine hunted it 3 years ago and he missed a 360 bull and two other bulls all the same day. It's a tough hunt but can be done. Spend a lot of time behind the glasses and find water.

Thanks for all the info guys. I hear so many mixed reviews about this unit but for the most part it sounds like its tough. Fortunately, tough is way better than impossible. So I plan to get after it and make the most of it, unless of course we drew something different(unlikely). Congrats to those of you that have been succesful in the past.

Folks, I own land on Sierra Mountain Ranch that directly borders state lands for easy hunting access to both 2A and 2B.  My understanding is this ranch is surrounded and engulfed completely by Unit 2B, and Unit 2A is directly across the highway - with access points very near, and a checkerboard-style way into 2A from my property thru state lands as well.

If you need a place to camp or jump off into a 2A/2B hunting area, feel free to DM me and let's talk!
