Ammo in a gun safe?

Recommended Posts

Guest akaspecials

Do you guys store ammo and powder in your gun safes? Seems like putting a bunch of explosives in a sealed area would make a giant bomb. But then again, any decent safe is fire resistant. I can't find any definitive answers on the matter. What are your all's thoughts?

I sure hopes it safe cause it's gonna blow up my house and the neighbors.

One good thing about storing powder in your safe: If it's ever stolen and the perps decide to use a cutting torch to open it.... well, they're in for a surprise! :)

The only ammo I store in the safe is loaded mags. I keep all the rest, including bulk powder in an old refridgerator in the garage.

Smokeless rifle powder burns better than it explodes. Storing it in a safe would probably make for quite a bomb if in larger quantities since it would be in a tight space. On a shelf in the garage won't make much of a bang. Black powder on the other hand is another story. It doesn't have to be confined to make a dramatic bang.

I worked for a guy at a reloading shop and he had to put all of his primers in a safe that was could withstand fire for 24 hours, because he had all his powder in a shed 10 feet away, if he didn't put the primers in the safe, it would be illegal. I would not put anything except for self defense ammo in magazines in your safe. if youre worried about it, put it in a lockable cabinet or buy a little stack-on safe. the stack-ons are cheap and wont become a bomb for sure...

Ammo seems to be worth more then firearms these days. I keep it all in the safe.
