New AR-15 gets broken in... kinda

Recommended Posts

On Saturday I took out a new AR-15 and zeroed it into about 1" at 100 yards with Federal Premium Law Enforcement 55 grain Nosler ballistic tip bullets. 3240 fps at muzzle - 2870fps at 100 yards. Call a coyote in on 2nd stand. Watch it come in at a run, turn a corner around a tree at 30 yards and run straight at me. I have my scope zeroed on his chest and pull the trigger. WHAP! You know you've got a solid hit. Coyote falls back on its haunches and begins yelping. I watch as it flips around a bit, gets to its feet, and runs off.

I sat there a bit thinking about the fps and energy that bullet carried at 30 yards as it hit the coyote dead center in the chest and all that came to mind was...

Yep, those 'yote are tough critters. I took a shoulder out of one with a .308 180 grain, it spun around, then ran off. 3 of us looked but couldn't find it. I found a big piece of bone and a handful of meat and blood where I hit him. Bottom line- put another one in them if they're doing the spin dance.

I'm not really surprised looking back on my time in the AF. We trained a lot with the Army and those guys told us stories all the time of lighting up Iraqis with NATO 5.56 (specifically M855). 8 rounds to the chest and the insurgents would get up and run off. With that being said yotes rarely run off when I hit them with Buffalo Bore 69 grain hp; however, it destroys the fur.

I once shot a big yote at 50yrds with 30 06 with wiinchester balistic tips... 150gr I believe........ hit him smack center in the chest and there was no exit at all.

granted he didn't get up but that bullet just shattered on impact.......... shot another 1 broad side and poked a nice size hoe on exit. same results with the .243 broadside with the 55gr ballistic tips just tears um up... frontal shots no problem.

I know you cussed at least under your breath... LOL!

Same thing happened to me a couple weeks ago! 55gr 22.250 right to the upper chest at 30 yards. He dropped, spinner, then hit a thick cut and disappeared.
